To New Friends

If you periodically attend the myriad fashion events that go on around NYC you’ll inevitably run into familiar faces. Or, as what happened on March 6th with Merz b. Schwanen’s store opening, you attend an event that’s so crowded that the familiar faces you knew interlock with the unfamiliar to create a beautiful impasto. By which I mean the possibilities for connecting with people become easier as friends all come together to connect on a shared common interest. For example, before Merz b. Schwanen’s store opening I attended a conversation between Paul Smith and Jian Deleon on the former’s launch of clubhouse in Nordstrom wherein I initially attended alone but ended up meeting friends midway through the discussion.

While the primary reason we’re there is to our common interest in fashion and clothing the other secondary and tertiary reasons revolve around a sense of community and desire to meet more people to expand it. These reasons are why I and others frequently attend these events, and why after going to them you inevitably become subsumed into the community. I’ve met many wonderful people in the community through going to such events and it only increases as I frequent them.

Personally, I don’t work in the fashion industry, and the ways in which I do are secondary and tertiary to it. The reason I initially gravitated towards it is because I truly care about fashion as a mode of expression. There are other people who frequent events who are in the same boat as me and feel similarly. While it may seem intimidating to go to these events, once you’re in you’ll find people who want to talk and share a discussion. Plus there’s usually alcohol if you’re inclined towards that as a method to loosen up.

The celebratory zeal at these events is always something to look forward too as well as the

company provided. At Merz b. Schwanen the event occasion was the celebration of their first U.S. store at the location itself. It was crowded. Even more crowded than anticipated by everyone involved as remarked by a word I had with the owners and the fact that it was pouring rain outside. Undampened by the rain, the energy in the store crowded next to everyone else was electric and fun. The store owners held a discussion with Throwing Fits about the company itself and their clothing being used in the show The Bear. The structure of events mostly follows a three way structure: 1. It starts and enough people come until… 2. A discussion/talk starts about the occasion of the event which ranges from a collaboration, release of new product, or celebrating a milestone, then… 3. People all talk to each other in the form of a mixer.

While it can be intimidating to initially join into these events, you’ll find good company among others as I did when I first started going to them. They’re a wonderful place to meet and make friends at, and I’m happy that I make appearances. If you’re ever in the area, I recommend going to the New York Fashion Geek Podcast with Reg Ferguson. They occur usually once a month and offer incredible discussion along with company. Finding out about events can be an issue, but once you go to one simply ask around about other such happenings. Here’s to hoping you, the reader, will attend them.
