Reginald Ferguson [00:00:01]:
Hello, I'm Reg.
Tiff [00:00:02]:
And I'm TIFF. And we're the Fashion Geeks trying to make New York and the world.
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:06]:
Well, New York is the world.
Tiff [00:00:07]:
A little flyer, one outfit and podcast at a time.
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:15]:
Welcome to the New York Fashion Geeks. I'm fashion geek number one. I'm Reg.
Tiff [00:00:20]:
I'm number two.
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:21]:
You are number two.
Tiff [00:00:22]:
Jumping the gun. Number two.
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:23]:
That's all right. You're TIFF? I'm Reg. She's TIFF. Thank you so much for coming back. And if you're a new listener, welcome to the ride. We're happy to have you.
Tiff [00:00:32]:
Very happy to have you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:33]:
Absolutely. I am the creator of New York fashion geek. It's a fashion consultancy. We work with men, improve their game. Essentially, we start from closet inventory all the way down to personal shopping and everything in between. Consider me a personal trainer for fashion.
Tiff [00:00:51]:
And I see a lot of guys out there that need some help. Then they need some training.
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:55]:
Bring them to me. Put them through some fashion calisthenics.
Tiff [00:00:59]:
There you go.
Reginald Ferguson [00:01:00]:
Push ups, sit ups with the pimacows. Yes.
Tiff [00:01:06]:
Good for you. I'm Tiffany TIFF, and I'm a friend who decided that it's about time that Reg took his brand out to the masses.
Reginald Ferguson [00:01:17]:
Thank you.
Tiff [00:01:17]:
And we were talking one night over a couple of really good martinis.
Reginald Ferguson [00:01:22]:
Dirty martinis.
Tiff [00:01:23]:
They were dirty olives. And I was like, let's do a podcast. And he goes, okay. And that's how we were born. I come to fashion from, I guess, a roundabout way. I'm an ex costume designer. I say ex because I did it for 20 years. I was an actress, but I also designed costumes. Designed them, built them from the bottom up. I've worked with patterning and fabric, and so I appreciate fashion from how it's made and how it fits on a person. I've done mostly costumes and mostly female, building a female wear. So the menswear is a new thing for me, a new angle. But I've always had an appreciative eye of a fine man in a fine suit.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:09]:
Watch out, then.
Tiff [00:02:13]:
The suit does make the man. I would have to I hope I've.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:16]:
Been made this evening.
Tiff [00:02:17]:
Reg, you rock it every time tonight. You're not wearing a suit. I am wearing a suit. Well, let me take that back. You're not kidded up with a tie, son's.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:28]:
Tie?
Tiff [00:02:29]:
Yes. And that's okay? With a suit? You can go without a tie.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:34]:
Absolutely.
Tiff [00:02:35]:
I mean, that is a question my husband often has for me.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:39]:
Well, it just depends on how the collar is laying. I didn't have any client appointments today, so I just decided, let me go smoothie. Smooth in a different direction.
Tiff [00:02:51]:
And I noticed your collar doesn't have buttons on it. It's just a no regular collar.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:56]:
We are not doing button down collars, gentlemen.
Tiff [00:02:59]:
Okay. I wanted to bring that up for.
Reginald Ferguson [00:03:01]:
That very reason and not for this type of look. I'm sorry. When I was growing up, I was down with the button down because I was very preppy. I literally went to prep school, went to Riverdale Country Day.
Tiff [00:03:11]:
So you had to have one of those button down college shirts.
Reginald Ferguson [00:03:14]:
It was duragure. But as I got older, particularly as a young adult, I just decided, probably with the help of GQ, to be candid, that, no, we're not doing that anymore. Matter of fact, every once in a while, what I would do is I would unbutton and let that go. Just showing a little.
Tiff [00:03:34]:
And to me, that was off because it was smooth. You have an unbuttoned button collar. Why don't you just wear a shirt with no buttonholes in it?
Reginald Ferguson [00:03:43]:
Understood.
Tiff [00:03:43]:
But you know what I mean?
Reginald Ferguson [00:03:44]:
But it was cool.
Tiff [00:03:45]:
Someone bring up the knit tie. That was often, and has often, back in the day, been worn with the button down college.
Reginald Ferguson [00:03:52]:
That was me. That was me. Solid wool knit tie, crochet plaid shirt, knit, knit.
Tiff [00:03:59]:
You know what I'm talking about?
Reginald Ferguson [00:04:00]:
Yeah.
Tiff [00:04:01]:
All right. That was good back in the day. Would you bring that? Absolutely. It's making a comeback. I don't know if you've noticed.
Reginald Ferguson [00:04:08]:
I don't truly believe it ever left. I mean, that's the whole style versus fashion conversation. I rocked that back when I was growing up, particularly in high school. And still that influences my pattern on Pattern Game, even though what you're talking about is a solid on the pattern. But I made a conscious choice when I was in high school, at least for one year, maybe even longer, to just constantly do that and just try to work different iterations. And that's why I'm so strong with the pattern on pattern Game now as.
Tiff [00:04:37]:
An adult, because you had the confidence to say, I like this. This is what I wear. This is who I am, and it works.
Reginald Ferguson [00:04:43]:
Yeah. I guess I didn't give it a lot of thought. I just said, this is what I want to do, and these are colors. And I've always been fly.
Tiff [00:04:52]:
Yes, you have. Every time I see you, I can't outfly you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:04:56]:
It's not a competition. It's not a competition.
Tiff [00:04:59]:
It is a competition. It is deep down inside for me. No, there's room for both of us.
Reginald Ferguson [00:05:06]:
There's room for everyone. And I want to talk about it. I've talked about it before. It's worth repeating. Actually, I have two things. One, gentlemen, you come out fly. You dapped out. You're walking down the street, you see another gentleman. He's also fly. Don't give him shade.
Tiff [00:05:24]:
Give him exactly.
Reginald Ferguson [00:05:26]:
There's 8 million mofos here. You are not the only one who has the dope ass kit.
Tiff [00:05:32]:
That's right. There can be many of you who are dope ass.
Reginald Ferguson [00:05:36]:
Spread love is the fashion way.
Tiff [00:05:37]:
That's right.
Reginald Ferguson [00:05:38]:
I do want to give a PSA though. This happens every damn season. People of New York. People of Earth. Earth, yes. Because our listenership goes beyond New York City.
Tiff [00:05:52]:
Yes, it does.
Reginald Ferguson [00:05:54]:
It's the fall. It's averaging 50 degrees.
Tiff [00:05:58]:
Very nice. Crisp.
Reginald Ferguson [00:05:59]:
Please leave the snow Parker at home. Stop.
Tiff [00:06:05]:
God. Yes.
Reginald Ferguson [00:06:06]:
Come on.
Tiff [00:06:06]:
Plenty of time to wear that in a month.
Reginald Ferguson [00:06:08]:
Puffer jacket. Keep it in the closet. You're only allowed to wear a down vest right now. That's it. No down coats. No, Parkers. No triple fat goose. Stop.
Tiff [00:06:21]:
It's not time yet.
Reginald Ferguson [00:06:22]:
This is ridiculous.
Tiff [00:06:23]:
I agree.
Reginald Ferguson [00:06:24]:
I have a peacoat. I have more than one. I have three peacoats. But the one that adorns my suit, that's what I'm rocking right now, guys.
Tiff [00:06:33]:
Very nice.
Reginald Ferguson [00:06:34]:
Stop with the down. There'll be plenty of time. Trust me. I'm down with the down, but not right now, right?
Tiff [00:06:43]:
We have four seasons, people.
Reginald Ferguson [00:06:45]:
Dips below 50 degrees, ladies and gentlemen. Pull out your down. Not a moment before. That's a PSA.
Tiff [00:06:53]:
Thank you very much, Rich, for that PSA.
Reginald Ferguson [00:06:55]:
That was brought to you by Nyfg boom.
Tiff [00:06:59]:
So moving on, catching up. As I said in our last episode, I've been traveling a lot.
Reginald Ferguson [00:07:07]:
Yes, you have. Banning the globe.
Tiff [00:07:09]:
And I think it's going to hopefully come to an end Thanksgiving weekend.
Reginald Ferguson [00:07:13]:
Coast to coast la. To Chicago.
Tiff [00:07:15]:
Well, funny, neither one of those towns, but okay, close.
Reginald Ferguson [00:07:19]:
Serge, appreciates the reference.
Tiff [00:07:21]:
I guess it was actually Miami to Columbus, Ohio. Yes.
Reginald Ferguson [00:07:25]:
No smooth operators there, I got to tell you.
Tiff [00:07:27]:
Columbus, Ohio, where we stayed on High Street, it was pretty fashionable in a hipster kind of way. I was quite impressed.
Reginald Ferguson [00:07:34]:
Well, it's Columbus, Ohio. It's the home of the Buckeyes.
Tiff [00:07:38]:
Right? Well, for me, Columbus, Ohio is a big town in the Midwest. I didn't think it would be as fashion forward as it was. I have to give a shout out to this one store we went to on High Street. My husband forgot some fashion items we needed for the wedding, so we had to tear out the hotel and do.
Reginald Ferguson [00:07:58]:
Some last minute fashion emergency.
Tiff [00:08:00]:
Oh, my God. We need pair of pants. We need a pair of pants. There's a store called Samson on High Street and I think the address is six six seven High Street, if I remember correctly. The gentleman was so very nice, helping us to fill that void, that one item that he had forgotten. And he took very good care of us. We ended up having to go to yet another store to find another item. But it was awesome. This store was amazing. It was all about man store. So not only did they have clothing, they had bar items and they had accessories. And the whole thing was wooden, leather and different levels. It was like being in a I don't know. And the gentleman had a turtleneck rocking a turtleneck with a jacket on top and some tight fitting twills. Not too tight, some perfectly fitting twills with a nice pair slim cut of shoes. And he just looked really put together. And I'm like, this guy's going to help us out.
Reginald Ferguson [00:09:00]:
Can I bust in there?
Tiff [00:09:01]:
Absolutely.
Reginald Ferguson [00:09:04]:
If you are a salesperson for a men's store or representing a label in a store and store, if you're not fly, you're not credible. I'm sorry.
Tiff [00:09:16]:
Very true.
Reginald Ferguson [00:09:17]:
I saw something recently and I've seen this individual before. This guy is not fly. You can't help me. First of all, I don't really need any help. And I'm not trying to sound like that, ladies and gentlemen. I know how that sounds, but I know my body, I know my measurements.
Tiff [00:09:33]:
And you also have a business that you are a style fashion consultant. So of course you know what you're doing, right? For yourself as well as for others.
Reginald Ferguson [00:09:41]:
But if you're a salesperson and your game isn't tight, you shouldn't be proffering advice.
Tiff [00:09:47]:
I would agree. And then if you find you recognize yourself in what Reg just said, please DM him. He can help you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:09:55]:
Insta new York fashion geek on the Insta.
Tiff [00:09:58]:
That's right.
Reginald Ferguson [00:09:58]:
Hit me up. Free consultation.
Tiff [00:10:00]:
So part of my traveling has been watching films, as I stated before. So I watched one of your recommended films.
Reginald Ferguson [00:10:07]:
Which one was this?
Tiff [00:10:08]:
Which first of all was like, why is Reg recommending this film to me? It was called Confessions of a Shopaholic.
Reginald Ferguson [00:10:14]:
Yes.
Tiff [00:10:15]:
First of all, for Reg to help me to watch that movie, I was like, oh, my God, I have to watch. If he's watching that movie and thought it was great, I'm going to love it. And I did. It was so much fun.
Reginald Ferguson [00:10:24]:
It's a silly movie.
Tiff [00:10:25]:
It was a very silly movie. And I'm happy to say that I'm not quite a shopaholic.
Reginald Ferguson [00:10:32]:
Me either.
Tiff [00:10:33]:
I'm on the verge.
Reginald Ferguson [00:10:34]:
I'm an enthusiast.
Tiff [00:10:35]:
Yes, that's the word. I'm not going to tell you anything about the movie just in case some of you have not seen it. You have to see it. But the character experiences things that happen to her that I kind of related to. Like mannequins in store windows calling you over and actually talking to you and telling you to buy the item that they are displaying.
Reginald Ferguson [00:10:57]:
Really?
Tiff [00:10:57]:
Yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:10:58]:
That's bad. But I have mannequin never spoken to me.
Tiff [00:11:01]:
I have blinders on. I can say I can walk by that door and go, that's nice. No, that looks good. That looks good. That would look good on me. Okay. Next door window clothing to me, but not mannequins. Yeah. I love touching fabric, as you know.
Reginald Ferguson [00:11:14]:
Yes.
Tiff [00:11:15]:
I love to size up Seamwork and form.
Reginald Ferguson [00:11:19]:
I'm surprised you didn't touch my suit, Jack.
Tiff [00:11:20]:
I haven't had the opportunity yet. You know, I will. It's smooth. It looks very nice.
Reginald Ferguson [00:11:26]:
Thank you.
Tiff [00:11:26]:
But I just want to tell you that I watched that.
Reginald Ferguson [00:11:28]:
Oh, I'm so glad.
Tiff [00:11:29]:
And also, my husband's been listening to all of our podcasts.
Reginald Ferguson [00:11:32]:
Really? Yet he is not a client. Michael at two. Michael, what's going on?
Tiff [00:11:38]:
And unfortunately on our trip, he actually took your advice about 20 shirts and I had to buy something for myself. And I let him out of my sight for literally ten minutes, and the next thing I know, he rang up for short. Four shirts, just like that. Boom, boom, boom, boom, boom. And I was like, okay, slow down, slow down, slow down. He's like, 20 shirts? 20 shirts.
Reginald Ferguson [00:12:04]:
You said 20 shirts. 20 shirts.
Tiff [00:12:07]:
And I couldn't say anything.
Reginald Ferguson [00:12:09]:
Michael, when are we doing this together? That's all I'm saying.
Tiff [00:12:14]:
I'll give him your DM. So, yeah, I just want to put it out there for you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:12:18]:
Very cool. You need 20 shirts. Gentlemen, let me explain why it's worth repeating. It's about mitigating wear and tear. Interesting. I'm a suit and tie guy. No tie tonight. But the point is this. I have a two week rotation in suits. It's the same principle. I don't want my stuff breaking down. If I have a suit, a suit should last me ten years. It should for you as well.
Tiff [00:12:46]:
That's amazing.
Reginald Ferguson [00:12:47]:
Why not?
Tiff [00:12:48]:
Well, I mean, especially for those. I mean, you can't fluctuate and wait. That's how a suit lasts as well.
Reginald Ferguson [00:12:53]:
Well, yes, you have to have good habits and good genes, but tying it but I'm bump no, I didn't even get that. Sorry.
Tiff [00:13:03]:
Good jeans are always a month.
Reginald Ferguson [00:13:04]:
I was so intense or intent on this. Again, the point across. You have shirts. If you have 20 shirts, essentially, that is a four week rotation. Essentially. Those shirts certainly are not going to last you ten years, but they're going to last you beyond a year. And that's why you should do it. You don't want your stuff fraying, worn, because, again, when that happens, you need to let me take those so I can give them to the Bowery Mission.
Tiff [00:13:30]:
Yes, but Michael, give them another life.
Reginald Ferguson [00:13:33]:
I applaud you on your 20, but you need to do that with me.
Tiff [00:13:36]:
He thanks you for your advice. So I want to talk about you. You said something about some sample sales this week.
Reginald Ferguson [00:13:47]:
Who said that?
Tiff [00:13:48]:
Oh, you did. And I get very excited when you talk about sample sales. I don't know, it kind of is like that feeling of something that hasn't been out there in the masses yet that I can possibly get at a very low markdown price.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:00]:
Exactly. That's exactly what it is. Ladies and gentlemen, I've been known to go to a sample sale here and there. There are three menswear sample sales going on this week, okay? Two Italian brands, one American.
Tiff [00:14:15]:
All right?
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:16]:
Now, that's all you're going to get, okay?
Tiff [00:14:18]:
If you want some more, you got to DM fashion geek.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:21]:
You got to let them want to come with? Hit me up on the Insta. Hit me up also at Reg@nyfashiongeek.com, either one.
Tiff [00:14:31]:
Or you can email as well.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:33]:
That's the email list. Yeah, that's the email. That's the email. No, it's okay. We have so many options, right? So I'm going to give you a free tip, guys and ladies, the first day of a sample sale is for scouting.
Tiff [00:14:47]:
Really?
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:48]:
Absolutely.
Tiff [00:14:49]:
No buying?
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:50]:
No, that's for rookies. I'm no rookie.
Tiff [00:14:53]:
Okay.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:53]:
I'm a pro.
Tiff [00:14:55]:
Wow. Now, I have to say, I've done quite a few sample sales myself, and I buy if I find something I like, I snatch that up. It's a sample. Who knows it's going to be there?
Reginald Ferguson [00:15:06]:
That's true. But you bring up a good point, TIFF. So let's talk about this. Ladies and gentlemen, a sample sale, particularly sample sales back in the day in New York, is just what Tiffany has mentioned, that it would be a one of a kind item, and it may.
Tiff [00:15:20]:
Not make it to production.
Reginald Ferguson [00:15:22]:
You're absolutely correct. Right. I'm sorry. I was trying to read your mind. Not only will it not make it to production, it may not make it to the longevity of the sale. That's really where I was.
Tiff [00:15:31]:
Right? Yeah, exactly.
Reginald Ferguson [00:15:34]:
Nowadays, it's rare to have that true sample. It's not that you don't see them, but now it's just more, hey, we have a bunch of items, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
Tiff [00:15:43]:
The sample sale has turned into something beyond the sample sale.
Reginald Ferguson [00:15:46]:
A little bit.
Tiff [00:15:46]:
Kind of like a little mini production.
Reginald Ferguson [00:15:49]:
A little bit.
Tiff [00:15:49]:
Okay.
Reginald Ferguson [00:15:50]:
And that's still okay. All right, so the point is, first day, you scout.
Tiff [00:15:56]:
Okay?
Reginald Ferguson [00:15:57]:
Look at stuff, try it on. But if you have real self control and you really want to be a New York fashion geek or a devotee of the Nyfg, a fan, you then come on the last day.
Tiff [00:16:11]:
The last day.
Reginald Ferguson [00:16:13]:
Yes.
Tiff [00:16:14]:
Okay.
Reginald Ferguson [00:16:14]:
You hide the stuff.
Tiff [00:16:19]:
Okay. There we go. I was wondering, because the last day, there's really not as much left, but.
Reginald Ferguson [00:16:23]:
You hide it in plain sight.
Tiff [00:16:25]:
Okay.
Reginald Ferguson [00:16:26]:
The point is, whatever time they open on Friday, be there before the door opens, and then casually go in, find your hidden cash. Don't have to try it on, because you already did. Scoop it up. Give the man or lady your card, and be gone and enjoy your day.
Tiff [00:16:44]:
Very nice.
Reginald Ferguson [00:16:45]:
That's what I'm doing.
Tiff [00:16:47]:
Very fly, very smooth.
Reginald Ferguson [00:16:48]:
I try.
Tiff [00:16:49]:
All right, great. That's what we have been up to lately, so I'm very excited. This episode is the inaugural guest episode.
Reginald Ferguson [00:17:01]:
Special guest. Boom, boom, boom. Is this another TIFF takeover?
Tiff [00:17:06]:
Yes, it is. Changing it up a little bit here and there. Well, he actually hopped on the mic with our last episode because he couldn't help himself. So I was like, why don't I just give this guy some time? Because especially with our fashion hero this week.
Reginald Ferguson [00:17:28]:
Fashion, fashion.
Tiff [00:17:33]:
The man has expressed a slight bit of interest, a slight.
Reginald Ferguson [00:17:37]:
Bit of bias, I think.
Tiff [00:17:38]:
Oh, I would think so. So I would like to introduce our guest for this episode. His name? He's our producer, Jim Search of Studios.
Reginald Ferguson [00:17:46]:
Hey, what's up? Welcome. Good to be here. Good to be here on the show.
Tiff [00:17:52]:
Good to have you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:17:53]:
Piping in yeah. Yeah. I couldn't help myself last episode, but this one now I have an official platform of sorts.
Tiff [00:18:05]:
I actually gave you a heads up about who our fashion sure did.
Reginald Ferguson [00:18:10]:
You sure did.
Tiff [00:18:11]:
Which normally we don't. Normally, we come in, we have our scripts, our outlines, and we have our fashion hero, and we drop it. And that's when Search first hears who our hero is.
Reginald Ferguson [00:18:21]:
Well, this is the true takeover, the TIFF takeover, because I am in the dark. And I guess I'll be running will I be running the board? I don't even know how to do this.
Tiff [00:18:29]:
Yeah, I think Search can do two things at.
Reginald Ferguson [00:18:34]:
Saying that.
Tiff [00:18:35]:
I don't think we need to worry about it. But let's get on with it, shall we? Because this is going to be huge.
Reginald Ferguson [00:18:40]:
Yeah.
Tiff [00:18:43]:
I want to say our fashion hero of the day is Ralph Lauren. So the reason why we had to pick him and I'm surprised we didn't pick him for an earlier episode closer to Fashion Week, because Fashion Week 2018. The spring summer 2018 Fashion Week that happened this fall yes. Honored 50 years of Ralph Lauren.
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:08]:
Wow. That's crazy, man.
Tiff [00:19:10]:
50 years. He is a fashion icon.
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:13]:
Okay, ladies and gentlemen, our producer Search is just cheesing right now, so clearly this means something to him for sure. Man. I've been wearing polo since, what, 2001? 2002.
Tiff [00:19:25]:
Well, I think we've all been affected by polo. I know. I first got my first inkling of polo in high school, so I graduated in 85. So it had to have been, like, 83, 84, when I was struggling to get that little pony on a piece of my clothes.
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:39]:
Oh, man. My first polo shirt was a polo sport. I still have it, actually.
Tiff [00:19:46]:
You do not.
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:47]:
I sure do. It's in the closet. Look, man, serious? Yeah.
Tiff [00:19:51]:
It's not Threadbear.
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:53]:
What's?
Tiff [00:19:53]:
That not Threadbear.
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:54]:
I don't even know what that means.
Tiff [00:19:56]:
Meaning it's washed so many times that's.
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:58]:
His fashion word of the day.
Tiff [00:19:59]:
Yeah. That's your fashion word of the day thread.
Reginald Ferguson [00:20:01]:
I guess I get a buzer for that.
Tiff [00:20:04]:
Meaning that you've worn it so often that it's kind of fraying here.
Reginald Ferguson [00:20:08]:
Definitely. It's got some wear and tear. It's got character. It's a polo sport shirt. It's got a Vneck, and it's got gray racing stripe down each arm.
Tiff [00:20:21]:
Wow.
Reginald Ferguson [00:20:21]:
And polo sport across the chest. That's the first polo shirt I ever got.
Tiff [00:20:25]:
What year vintage?
Reginald Ferguson [00:20:26]:
What he said 20 01 20 01.
Tiff [00:20:30]:
20 02 all right.
Reginald Ferguson [00:20:32]:
That's what, 16 years old. Wow.
Tiff [00:20:36]:
I'm trying to think if I have anything in my closet that's 16 years old.
Reginald Ferguson [00:20:39]:
I definitely do. But since you guys are running the show here, I'm in chime in mode. Yeah. Look, Red, we're just going to talk polo.
Tiff [00:20:50]:
But this is your fucking show, right? He's our guest.
Reginald Ferguson [00:20:55]:
I understand that, but clearly you two are passionate about Ralph Lauren.
Tiff [00:20:59]:
Well, what do you have? You said you still have anything? Do I have what you have?
Reginald Ferguson [00:21:04]:
Well, hold on. First of all, let me give my chronology as the older head here versus our producer search. My first experience with polo, ralph Lauren.
Tiff [00:21:16]:
80S, early, mid, or late?
Reginald Ferguson [00:21:20]:
Early.
Tiff [00:21:21]:
Okay. Same as me.
Reginald Ferguson [00:21:24]:
But clearly I am not at this fanatical level that our producer is at.
Tiff [00:21:31]:
Yeah, neither am I. And that's why we have that's why you're on. Your search is on. But let me just drive this for a second. Sure. One reason why I feel like we have to have him as a fashion hero is because he is the man has been around for 50 years designing menswear, ladies wear, children's wear, sheets and towels.
Reginald Ferguson [00:21:55]:
Houseware.
Tiff [00:21:56]:
Housewares. He has a ranch, so he's got ranch wear. He also collects antique cars.
Reginald Ferguson [00:22:03]:
That car collection is dope. The polo bar. I mean, there's a restaurant like, they got the restaurant. Have you been to the polo bar? Of course you have. Look at this.
Tiff [00:22:15]:
I never knew that there was a polo bar.
Reginald Ferguson [00:22:17]:
And I used to run dark. I have the business cut. Look at the napkins up there. I'm sorry. Let me put my spectacles on. Big shout out to classic specs people.
Tiff [00:22:27]:
We are in the presence.
Reginald Ferguson [00:22:28]:
Oh, my God. Raffle, run napkins. Ladies and gentlemen, our producer search is so ride or die that when he went to the polo lounge, he took napkins. Yeah. The lowlifes would have been proud of me. Yes. You took the cow, the bag. I thought that would come up. All right, save that. We are in Brooklyn, New York, talking about polo. I understand that. I just felt like we were going to release that all early. All right, well, that's fine. Obviously, I could chime in on this, because I was here when that happened and you were not. You mean not happening still? I know it's still going on.
Tiff [00:23:11]:
So let's start at the beginning.
Reginald Ferguson [00:23:13]:
Over at the Brooklyn museum, there was, like, ten low lights on what is the first Saturday, man, they're still out there chilling. Yeah. Big shout out brooklyn Museum. There's still motherfuckers running around here. Was I there? For what? Polo USA? The united shoplifters association? No. Like, I know my history, dude. I understand. I'm just saying I was there. Clearly you know your history, and TIFF has no idea what we're talking about.
Tiff [00:23:37]:
Oh, actually, I do. I did my research because this conversation happened several weeks ago.
Reginald Ferguson [00:23:42]:
Yes. Unrecorded.
Tiff [00:23:45]:
Yeah, it was unrecorded. It was between the two of you guys because we did kind of talk about Ralph Lauren briefly about his 50th anniversary and wow, how long it's been from the Bronx been in the game. And that's what I wanted to lead into going talking about the low lives and their effect on the polo brand and polo brand's importance in their lives and how that was a different experience from what I had growing up in small town north Carolina, which is what we're going to talk about. But one of the things that I really wanted to emphasize about this man was that he was born and raised.
Reginald Ferguson [00:24:27]:
New York in the Bronx. Up in the Bronx where the people are fresh. I believe he went to Clinton. Did he go to Clinton?
Tiff [00:24:33]:
That I don't know.
Reginald Ferguson [00:24:34]:
Well, search you can multitask. What high school? No, wait, this is the high school we went to. Okay, we'll find out for us. We can look that up. I think he went to Clinton.
Tiff [00:24:45]:
But he did definitely went to Baruch College. That I know.
Reginald Ferguson [00:24:48]:
I do know that Lauren is not his real last name. No, we all know what his written. It's Ralph Lipschitz. Everyone knows that. Well, I'm a native New Yorker.
Tiff [00:24:58]:
And he grew up poor. He grew up poor. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Belarus. And he basically grew up scraping by.
Reginald Ferguson [00:25:13]:
Like the rest of yeah, he went to Clinton. He went to Clinton. Okay. Yeah. We don't say full name. Okay. He went to Clinton.
Tiff [00:25:22]:
Okay, got it. Reg is from the Bronx, so clearly.
Reginald Ferguson [00:25:25]:
He knows I'm from Manhattan. Oh, I'm from Manhattan. I lived in the Bronx. I went to school in the Bronx. I did a significant stint in the Bronx. I have family in the Bronx, but I'm actually from the West Village.
Tiff [00:25:33]:
Oh, okay.
Reginald Ferguson [00:25:36]:
But I'm repping the Bronx right now.
Tiff [00:25:38]:
I wanted to bring that up, that this man is born and raised. I know we talked about in an earlier episode, the difference being from Manhattan and being born and raised in Manhattan.
Reginald Ferguson [00:25:47]:
Yeah. This dude is worth $7.1 billion.
Tiff [00:25:52]:
Yes, he is crazy. And it's across several brands. I'm going to mention some brands, and this is not all of them. Polo. Ralph Lauren. Ralph Lauren Collection. Lauren. Ralph Lauren. Double RL ralph Lauren children's wear denim and supply.
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:07]:
Rest in peace. I love that line, man.
Tiff [00:26:09]:
Chaps Club Monaco.
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:11]:
Do you know what Chap stands?
Tiff [00:26:12]:
Purple label.
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:13]:
You know what Chap stands for?
Tiff [00:26:15]:
No.
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:15]:
Could have had a polo shirt.
Tiff [00:26:19]:
And speaking of that, this guy is.
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:21]:
Ride or die, ladies and gentlemen. I believe he has an RL 67 tattoo somewhere. Well, I wouldn't go that far. You're going pretty far. You got napkins from the polo club? I do. I do have that. Do you have flatware as well? Not yet. We're working on oh, not yet. You're going to low life in the restaurant? Maybe we'll find out. Sheets. Yeah. Distinct. Yeah, the towels are polo.
Tiff [00:26:48]:
That's the first Ralph Lauren. Actually, no. The second Ralph Lauren thing I own. It was after I moved to the city was a set of Ralph Lauren towels, bath towels. That's how I knew. And one of the things very classic at the gala celebrating Ralph Lauren's 50.
Reginald Ferguson [00:27:06]:
Years, which we tried, particularly Tiffany. She really wanted to get us.
Tiff [00:27:11]:
It was black tie, by the way. I bet only 200 guests only 200, so there's no way we were going to get in.
Reginald Ferguson [00:27:18]:
And our producer search didn't get in.
Tiff [00:27:19]:
So we know Oprah was speaking. She's the main speaker, so there's no way we were going to get yeah, but anyway, what she said was she knew that she had made it when she bought her first set of Ralph Lauren Tobbles. And when I read that, I was like, that was me. Before we hop in with the low.
Reginald Ferguson [00:27:40]:
Life.
Tiff [00:27:43]:
Discuss my experience. So I was in high school. I was an artsy fartsy kid, so kind of nerdy, but I was fed friends in all the different clicks and everything. And to be popular, what really signified you as popular was a polo button down shirt, and it had a little pony on the breastplate.
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:07]:
Our producer is plaids beside himself.
Tiff [00:28:09]:
Plaids or classic white.
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:12]:
Okay.
Tiff [00:28:13]:
Anything with a pony. If you had a pony on your pocket or on your breast, you were.
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:20]:
Somebody, you were in.
Tiff [00:28:21]:
You were in. I was in if I had a pony, but I didn't have a pony. I didn't have a pony, and my parents couldn't afford to buy me a pony, but I hung with those who had a pony.
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:34]:
Sometimes that's all you need.
Tiff [00:28:36]:
Right. And I think I was so upset that I couldn't have the brands and the labels, because there were other labels at the time, too. I'm trying to think of the all I can think of was chick jeans in 9th grade.
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:50]:
Chick jeans. Whoa.
Tiff [00:28:52]:
Yeah. And I had a pair of chick oh, yeah, absolutely. I have to have Calvin jeans. But yeah, when it came to the polo shirt, I couldn't quite level up. So what I did, which I talked about in prior episodes, was I became pretty in pink, and I saw that movie. I'm like, that's me. Vintage thrift store. Thrift store. Non label wearing, self expressed theater geek.
Reginald Ferguson [00:29:22]:
She's weird.
Tiff [00:29:23]:
But I was accepted because I was strong in my conviction of, oh, I don't wear labels. I don't wear labels.
Reginald Ferguson [00:29:30]:
She's cool, yet weird.
Tiff [00:29:32]:
There we go. So that was my experience with polo and going to college, the same thing. I think I finally got one polo shirt. It was plaid. It was beautiful. I remember it had some pinks and greens in it, which are the colors of my alma mater. And I love that shirt and was my only one, and I would wear it from time to time when I wanted to feel uber preppy, and that's what I felt. So that was classism in a way.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:00]:
Absolutely. Well, you said preppy, and I'm the genuine article based on where I went to school, my very first acquisition, my grandparents got it for me. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a broadcloth cotton, button down turquoise.
Tiff [00:30:17]:
Turquoise. Wow. Reg, that's great.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:20]:
Yep. Wow.
Tiff [00:30:21]:
I bet that looked awesome.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:22]:
Oh, it did.
Tiff [00:30:23]:
And it would probably still look awesome on. You, too, if you still had it.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:26]:
Well, I'm a big boy now.
Tiff [00:30:30]:
Oh, that was a little boy color.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:32]:
No, meaning my size a grown ass. Thank you. But to your point, to give you the visual, everyone, I rocked it with my gray corduroy suit and my navy wool tie.
Tiff [00:30:49]:
Very nice.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:51]:
And my floor shine split toe monk straps.
Tiff [00:30:55]:
Whoa.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:56]:
I didn't mess around.
Tiff [00:30:57]:
No, you didn't.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:58]:
No.
Tiff [00:30:58]:
I'm impressed.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:59]:
That doesn't sound like games are being played.
Tiff [00:31:02]:
All right, that was 9th grade. That sounds completely different from me in my experience, because you had it. You rocked it.
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:10]:
And we rocked the cologne because my late grandfather oh, my god.
Tiff [00:31:13]:
That cologne.
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:14]:
Polo cologne. Polo cologne. The original green bottle. I have the green bottle. My grandpa rocked that. And because I emulated my late grandfather, I rocked it as well.
Tiff [00:31:25]:
Half my high school smelled like polo cologne.
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:27]:
We got him that at least a few father's days in a row. But he also wanted we got him the crazy large one that's like this big.
Tiff [00:31:37]:
The costco size.
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:38]:
Oh, wow. Yeah, that one. My late grandfather had mad style, and I emulated his style. Like, for example, when I was in high school, I wore a fedora in high. This was so this wasn't the real deal. I tried. I mean, I loved my grandfather and I loved his steez, but when it came to cologne grandpa, you're looking down. You know, you wore too much of it.
Tiff [00:32:06]:
Yeah, and that's the problem with the polo, is everybody he was swimming in it too much.
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:10]:
God, I used to tease him all the time. I was like, stand still, there'll be a puddle.
Tiff [00:32:15]:
One of my boyfriend stopped talking braided on a bear. Teddy bear.
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:18]:
He would just rock, right? Oh, wait, let's talk about the teddy bear.
Tiff [00:32:22]:
Oh, yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:23]:
How many tedy bears do you have? I want to say like six, maybe.
Tiff [00:32:30]:
What?
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:31]:
Where are tedy bear t shirts? Or like oh, you mean like the either or any iteration of polo teddy bear? Yeah, that's actually you got a teddy bear up right there. Of course you do. And then I'm looking around five in the closet. Five, six. Of course you do.
Tiff [00:32:47]:
You have teddy bears in the closet. Something we need to talk about.
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:51]:
It's a my therapist and I go.
Tiff [00:32:56]:
I'm going to shift it to you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:57]:
Sure.
Tiff [00:32:58]:
Reg and I have shared our experience about acquiring our acquisitions. Acquisitions of our polo.
Reginald Ferguson [00:33:05]:
Hello.
Tiff [00:33:07]:
I want to hear about tell me about the low life.
Reginald Ferguson [00:33:10]:
Well, I can. But for the record, I'm not a low life. Correct. That's not who I am. I would say, if anything, low life adjacent.
Tiff [00:33:22]:
Okay, correct.
Reginald Ferguson [00:33:23]:
Know these dudes.
Tiff [00:33:24]:
All right, let's tell our listeners what exactly is a low life?
Reginald Ferguson [00:33:28]:
Sure. Low lives are not as heavy as they were in the late 80s. Early 90s is a gang from brooklyn who would run into department stores and they would steal everything. Polo from head to toe, from mannequins were not safe. And now you got to remember, this is back when the security, there was a guy standing there who didn't have that or who had a lot to lose and would say, all right, take whatever the fuck you want. 50 kids. Because they would run into stores like 40, 50 deep. And they would take everything they could because the whole like a wave, like.
Tiff [00:34:16]:
A wave.
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:19]:
They'D run in the store. They'd take everything, polo and other stuff too. I mean, like Izod guest descente, all that stuff. They took everything because they were boosters, right?
Tiff [00:34:28]:
And then they would sell it on the street.
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:30]:
They would sell it for half the retail value. Okay, so a lot of those dudes made their money, made all their money boosting. So yeah, they'd run up in these stores and just strip them down and would be dressed head to toe in polo. I mean, you can spot it if you wear enough polo and you know enough about like you can still walk the streets of Brooklyn and anywhere today, that dude's a low light.
Tiff [00:35:00]:
I've seen the pictures and it's like head to toe. It's head, different logos, different part of.
Reginald Ferguson [00:35:06]:
The Ralph low and bright, bright colors.
Tiff [00:35:08]:
Bright primary colors.
Reginald Ferguson [00:35:10]:
Yeah, you know, man, it's funny. I went to a bar in the city once and I had on polo shirt. It had the big symbol on the front and the bouncer had on one of the hats from like 93. And I looked at it and I was like, yo, man, that's a nice hat. And he looked at me, he's like, that's a nice shirt. And right there, I was just like, you a low life? He's like, yes. And I was like, let's talk about it. And so I didn't even go in the bar. I just sat there and talked to them and we just shot the shit. And he was like, yo, man, you got to come to the barbecue because the little life annual barbecue barbecue. And I was like, yeah, I probably ain't going to miss that. I wear polo as much as the next guy. But that's a major league.
Tiff [00:35:58]:
How you acquire it is quite different.
Reginald Ferguson [00:36:00]:
Yeah, but that's the thing. There's low lives who don't run up in stores anymore.
Tiff [00:36:10]:
Because I was going to ask you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:36:11]:
Does that still happen, life after low lives? Yes, it does, actually.
Tiff [00:36:16]:
So the gang still exists and it's still active.
Reginald Ferguson [00:36:20]:
But what I'll say is there's still guys who go boost, but what they do is they go to Salvation Army or they'll go to thrift stores where there's no security, where there's minimal security. And on top of that, you go to these thrift stores, especially on the upper West Side. Upper East Side. You're going to find some vintage stuff.
Tiff [00:36:39]:
Absolutely. Because there's you go where the money is. Because the money people discard their clothes, and they sometimes just give it to.
Reginald Ferguson [00:36:45]:
Salvation Army on top of that. Yes, you go where the money is. But if you go up there, you're going to find older folks who have a polo shirt from the they're like, I don't want this shit anymore. And they give it away. And it's like, you could sell that for $400. I used to have a friend who would and that's where I'd get a lot of my polo stuff, is he would spend all day walking thrift store to thrift store looking for polo to go sell on ebay and to sell online. Because there's a market, right.
Tiff [00:37:24]:
I read an article which said an item, a polo shirt of some kind was selling for $2,000 on ebay. $2,000.
Reginald Ferguson [00:37:33]:
When we get to our next segment, you'll hear about I got that for you.
Tiff [00:37:38]:
All right, well, I've got something for you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:37:46]:
So as I said, my first polo shirt was the polo sport with a gray racing stripe. And my latest, since this is my first and then we'll go to the most recent purchase is I just bought a Polo USA edition tracksuit. So there's a matching top. Oh, my God. Half of it is in the mail. Half of it's already come. The other half is coming tomorrow. That's throwback Christmas already. Yeah. Because the thing is, I was thinking about it very eighty s. Oh, yeah. Well, I mean, early 90s matching track. Well, yeah, that is definitely harken to the 80s. But this I was saying to myself, because it's like this is like classic, classic polo. When I get it, the world will know. Oh, my God.
Tiff [00:38:37]:
You're going to put it up on all social media.
Reginald Ferguson [00:38:39]:
Oh, yeah. I'm going to be out there.
Tiff [00:38:42]:
You're going to be rocking. It going to be fly head to toe.
Reginald Ferguson [00:38:45]:
And ladies and gentlemen, let's just be clear. Our producer search right now, as we speak, is head to toe polo. This is true. Rocking his beverage in a polo mug. This is true.
Tiff [00:38:57]:
And I just wanted to add, the T shirt is a white undershirt. A polo white undershirt.
Reginald Ferguson [00:39:03]:
Yeah.
Tiff [00:39:03]:
Meaning that you can be fashionable even in a white absolutely.
Reginald Ferguson [00:39:07]:
In your loungewear. But my point is, ladies and gentlemen, he's got a bed. Yeah.
Tiff [00:39:13]:
Well, one thing I wanted to cover was in part of my research, we got to talk about why was this so coveted? Why did the lowlife form and in my research, it was from two different gangs who were stealing stuff, one from Brownsville, one from Crown Heights, and they came together to form the United Shoplifters Association USA.
Reginald Ferguson [00:39:39]:
Yeah, yeah.
Tiff [00:39:41]:
It was very organized.
Reginald Ferguson [00:39:43]:
TIFF I'm very impressed by your level of research.
Tiff [00:39:46]:
Well, because I was so intrigued. I mean, first of all, this is a huge fashion can. I know why his items are a must have item. Why? His design is classic. He defines American prep. He's basically been around forever. And he has a background that sort of starts that's similar to a lot of New Yorkers, starts from the bottom and works his way to the top. But one thing I wanted to explore is why polo? Ralph Lauren? I mean, this is a huge boosting association formed just for this brand. Let's talk about that.
Reginald Ferguson [00:40:29]:
Well, first, before we do well, since you did your research, did you find out how the name Lowlife came to be?
Tiff [00:40:40]:
Gosh, I know, I read it. I was reading about this gentleman named.
Reginald Ferguson [00:40:44]:
Thurston, thurston Howe the Third. Wow. Of course, I was there for all that.
Tiff [00:40:49]:
And how he the bucket.
Reginald Ferguson [00:40:51]:
We had no idea. We had no idea. Reg, we thought you were born in 1990.
Tiff [00:40:59]:
When I read about Thurston Howe and he spells it thurston T-H-I-R-S-T-I-N. Because he's thirsting for the brand. But it was the Bucket hat. It was the Bucket hat that just sort of really launched it. Right.
Reginald Ferguson [00:41:16]:
The name lowlife.
Tiff [00:41:18]:
Well, no, that's not right. The name low Life. No, as soon as you say it, I'll go, that's right.
Reginald Ferguson [00:41:27]:
So legend has it that Thurston Howell, aka. Big Vic Lowe, was out at a party and he was dressed head, toe and polo, and he was talking to some girl, and I guess she got mad at him or he got mad at her, however it went down. But she said, you know what? You're this, you're that. You're nothing but a low life. That's all you do. You just wear polo. You're just a low life. And he was like, you're right. I am a low life. He owned it and said, I guess that's what I'll be. And then that's how the name Lowlifes came to be.
Tiff [00:42:04]:
All right, well, there we go. I had not read that story well.
Reginald Ferguson [00:42:09]:
I don't even know if that's in print, but that is off of the love and loyalty soundtrack.
Tiff [00:42:15]:
Okay.
Reginald Ferguson [00:42:15]:
That the source.
Tiff [00:42:17]:
Legend has it.
Reginald Ferguson [00:42:18]:
Yeah. G. George told the story of how that came to be. But the love and loyalty soundtrack was from the source at the time. This is I don't know, I think early 2000s, they were doing coverage of the low lives, et cetera, and they were doing all these interviews. And so G. George told the story about what just happened. So that is the etymology of Low lies. I will say I'm very impressed with your research here. I had no idea what I was getting myself.
Tiff [00:43:01]:
I'm a virgo, very well prepared.
Reginald Ferguson [00:43:03]:
Me too. I'm a virgo too. I get you.
Tiff [00:43:07]:
Well, I also wanted to one of the things I wanted to discuss was what was apparent in the fact that here is a designer making designs for people, rich people, for white people, rich white people of that class. And here we have the low lives.
Reginald Ferguson [00:43:30]:
One of the crown heights.
Tiff [00:43:32]:
Right. One of the quotes I read was you say, I can't have this. Well, yes, I can, and I'm going to take it. And that was kind of sort of what that was about. It was about them deciding, this is not going to be just for them. We're going to take this over. It was part of the cultural movement at the time with the rap music as well.
Reginald Ferguson [00:43:53]:
Can I chime in on that? Yeah, of course. On two points. I know I'm a rookie to this whole conversation. You're not a rookie, but let's talk about this. First of all, let's talk about Ralph Lauren, Ralph Lipschitz, who creates an image. Let's just talk about right, right, okay. Polo.
Tiff [00:44:13]:
And he said he doesn't create clothes. He creates.
Reginald Ferguson [00:44:18]:
This is a hard, scrabble guy from the Bronx. He went to Clinton, and he creates this image, this lifestyle, and he did.
Tiff [00:44:27]:
It because he wanted that.
Reginald Ferguson [00:44:29]:
That's what I'm getting into. This is about attainability through social class and strata through clothing.
Tiff [00:44:36]:
Right.
Reginald Ferguson [00:44:37]:
And fashion has always represented that throughout its history. Yes, but we're talking about I'm just trying to put the ironies all out there for the listeners, definitely. That he's created this, which really to both your points, is inaccessible, and I had to really be targeted about who the end user, who the purchaser was. But let's also talk about because you've snipped at it, and he has as well meaning search. But let's also try to bring this in together. Certainly. And I can only talk about from a New York City perspective and nowhere else. Right. Because I'm from here. I've never lived anyplace else. So you have these individuals. The thing about we can't ignore that this brand impacted hip hop. Oh, for sure.
Tiff [00:45:24]:
Oh, yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:45:24]:
I mean, outside of the low lives, I mean, you go down south in Atlanta, polo was like the southern low. Yeah, south low. So you go down south. That was like the standard, I mean, trick daddy, huge polo collector. You go to Chicago, 88 Keys producer out of there. He's a huge polo dude, kanye west at a time. Right? The old Kanye. The old Kanye 2006 Kanye. So you're right in terms of the impact that polo had on hip hop is undeniable. There's a great documentary, Horsepower, you should check out. It's on YouTube, I think complex maybe produced it. But they interview rappers from how many name drops? It's huge. But they interview rappers. They talk about just the culture surrounding polo. There's people who make their living off of selling polo, buying and selling.
Tiff [00:46:36]:
They subculture kind of thing.
Reginald Ferguson [00:46:39]:
Oh, for sure, absolutely.
Tiff [00:46:41]:
That Ralph Lauren could never have dreamt of.
Reginald Ferguson [00:46:43]:
No, of course not. But that's the beauty of us as.
Tiff [00:46:47]:
African Americans and what you have created.
Reginald Ferguson [00:46:51]:
And what black folks want to make cool, they make cool. We set the and we're the like, for example, with polo, it came to as I think you were like, this is something that is so unattainable. I mean, this is the Hamptons. This is West Hampton. I mean, these are people who are playing polo or literally playing polo. And then you go to the streets of brownsville and you look like a guy who's ready to go out onto the golf course. Right? So hip hop and black culture, in a way, they force their way into the mainstream. Like, this is who we are and this is what we're going to wear.
Tiff [00:47:38]:
And it's all come full circle now because the mainstream is one of the articles I read is playing hip hop music and rap music in the higher end society parties.
Reginald Ferguson [00:47:52]:
Rap music is now pop music. Yes. It hasn't been rebel it hasn't been rebel music since I was a child.
Tiff [00:47:59]:
Full circle.
Reginald Ferguson [00:47:59]:
As the first generation of hip hop, let us not also ignore, and I would love to believe, and of course, I'll never know, maybe search does the inclusion that Ralph Lauren did by having Tyson beckford oh, for sure. The spokes man. Yeah, I mean, that was mean. That was such a huge step in terms of beautiful man, in terms of black representation, in fashion modeling and that stance as well. And it's funny, polo rereleased the snow beach collection, which thurston Howell II was a model for, that they reached out to him. I mean, how crazy is it that this dude 30 years ago was stealing polo and now is representing polo? Yeah, he's the guy. He was one of the guys. Right. Anywho, I'm being shown a picture of a polo jersey. It looks like all right. Have you ever seen that jersey before? Yes, I have seen this. Thurston hall II has one, and now I'm looking at okay, so does your oh, yeah. Oh, I know. Yeah, you told me about yes, now, but now you get to see so this was the big reveal. I should tell you listeners, what was happening before. This is reg and TIFF had what appeared to be like incriminating photo. It had all the trappings of them having a picture of something happening that they kept very, uh so I am now looking at reg's black and red polo sport. It is pretty tight. Mess around. Yeah, it's dope, dude. I like this.
Tiff [00:50:06]:
I have to go on record. I've never seen anything like that before. Because that's not the polo that I know growing up. The polo that you must have. That's not it.
Reginald Ferguson [00:50:18]:
I happen to have that on one summer day. Oh, yeah, that'll get some in Brooklyn. Oh, yeah. Big time. Walking down decal. What auspicious timing. What special event was happening that day? Search what day? What? This was many years ago. My point is the picnic, the low life picnic. People lost their minds. I am just trying to walk down the street. Okay, you're at the low life bar. Okay, got it. I was just walking down the street. Costed there's also the show, your low, which is on 42nd street in the winter. So you see a lot of bubble gooses out there. You'll see people wearing like three or four bubble coats at the same time. What? Yeah, for sure. They'll come out. They come out. It's fucking insane. But they wear like four coats. They'll strip one off, right? And then they'll strip another one off and then people go crazy for it. We're almost at the top of the hour, but there's so many stories I got not so many. I only have one. That's pretty funny.
Tiff [00:51:27]:
Yeah. Trying to get a word in edgewise with you about this has been difficult. But your stories are all fun. And I tell you, meeting someone who's so into one fashion brand is very interesting because you are it head to toe.
Reginald Ferguson [00:51:47]:
You are Mr. Polo in this space right now. Yes.
Tiff [00:51:52]:
And one of the things I wanted to bring up is there's a new collaboration now with polo that kind of sort of reminds me of the collaboration with versace and dapper dan. Gucci and dapper dan, sorry, is it palace now? There's a brand.
Reginald Ferguson [00:52:11]:
This is news to me.
Tiff [00:52:12]:
Yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:52:13]:
That's why when you showed me palace and I was like, thurston hall II lives in a palace. I know he's got a low mansion, but I don't know if he lives in a palace.
Tiff [00:52:23]:
No, it goes along with what I was saying about how this has come full circle, how the hip hop, the boosters were taking this brand fashion, and now they are in charge of it with this new kind of sort of collaboration. And I'm struggling to find it on my phone. I think it's called with palace, a brand called palace, but I'm not 100% sure, so I don't want to speak as if I know.
Reginald Ferguson [00:52:52]:
Right.
Tiff [00:52:53]:
But there is kind of like and it's similar to me and what we talked about with gucci and dapper dan. It's kind of like the two ends coming together and meeting. You had this outlaw culture acquiring in know, acquiring the logo and label and making it his own and putting it out on his own clothing and label, and it coming full circle. And now he's actually legitimately putting out gucci clothes. And so the same with Ralph Lauren. They are pairing up with and I'm doing a little dance here. Why don't you somebody else take.
Reginald Ferguson [00:53:35]:
We could always talk about that another segue I was going to say. I mean, I can certainly talk about the time that I was at work and during the day I teach and I was at another school and I'll truncate the story to the best of my ability, but I was dressed as I am known to head to toe in polo. I had on the denim and supply bubble coat with the fur lining and the polo hat and the polo boots. And I saw this guy who had on a polo hat, but I saw him watch me. This was like, in the cafeteria. I was like, this guy. I see this guy watching me. So then I go outside or whatever, and then he passes by. I see him again. We kind of, like, acknowledge each other. He walks up to me, and I'm in the middle of work, of course, and he goes, hey, man, are you a low life? And I was like, at school, at school, at school. And I was like, what did you just say? He's like, no, I just want to know if you're a low life. I was like, Nah, man, I'm adjacent. Adjacent. And so then we start talking, and he's like, Yo, man, check this out. And he has the Snow Beach bag, and he opens it up, and he's got a Snow Beach T shirt. And I was like, Where'd you get this shit? And so we started talking, and yeah, that was in the middle of work, man, where you talk about worlds colliding, but I'm working at an institution of education, and here I am talking booster talk with parent, which is great.
Tiff [00:55:07]:
I love that story.
Reginald Ferguson [00:55:08]:
Oh, thank you. Thank you so much.
Tiff [00:55:12]:
It makes me smile.
Reginald Ferguson [00:55:13]:
Oh, good.
Tiff [00:55:14]:
It's the second time I've been cheeses.
Reginald Ferguson [00:55:17]:
Throughout the whole did I feel some.
Tiff [00:55:20]:
Time for you to reach out. Palace is a skateboard brand.
Reginald Ferguson [00:55:24]:
Okay.
Tiff [00:55:25]:
So Ralph Lauren is in collaboration, and palace is known for its product Drops, where it launches a new collection without warning. And so Ralph Lauren is collaborating with palace in a new line that's coming out very soon. Good Lord. We have gone 55 minutes.
Reginald Ferguson [00:55:47]:
Well, this is important stuff.
Tiff [00:55:49]:
Well, keep your eye out. It is a preppy meets street wear collaboration, so that's going to be very interesting. It may be legitimizing using the word loosely. The low life. What the lowlifes have been doing all of it this entire time?
Reginald Ferguson [00:56:06]:
Time will tell.
Tiff [00:56:07]:
Yeah. And there we have it.
Reginald Ferguson [00:56:09]:
TikTok. So do we have an I must have it, I must have it have it? Oh, absolutely we do, but it's a special takeover edition.
Tiff [00:56:32]:
Meanwhile, of course, my I must have it item was anything with a pony on it. Come on. I must have anything with a pony on it.
Reginald Ferguson [00:56:40]:
Well, that bar is low. I can give you one if you want.
Tiff [00:56:45]:
Now, we already see how that works in the prior episode.
Reginald Ferguson [00:56:48]:
There's plenty of polo shirts I have okay. If you want one.
Tiff [00:56:51]:
All right. What's yours?
Reginald Ferguson [00:56:53]:
My I must have it. Well, since you ask and I almost did have it. And there's a fun story behind it is the Snow Beach pullover coat. I almost had it. It was made now, to give you a visual of it, this jacket was worn by Raequan in the Kennedy So Simple video. What?
Tiff [00:57:17]:
Saw a picture of it.
Reginald Ferguson [00:57:18]:
You saw a picture of it? Yep. And during the and again, I was at work and it came out. It was available for sale. Like, the whole line was being rereleased at like, ten in the morning, right? And I told lady I work with I was just like, Look, I have to make a phone call at 10:00 a.m. I can't believe this. Unbelievable. At ten. All right. It's very important that I be on the phone. So I get to the phone, I'm on there and I'm doing it, I'm going through it. I get to it. I get to the screen to buy it, right? It's a large. And I'm like, I got it. And I put in and it's going for like, $400. This is it. I hit send to complete the order. Sold out.
Tiff [00:58:11]:
Oh, my God. That's a nightmare.
Reginald Ferguson [00:58:15]:
I was fucking devastated. It cannot be that simple. Can it be that it was also simple? Amen? It was not, man. It was very difficult for me, I have to say.
Tiff [00:58:28]:
I think you need to watch the film Confessions of a Shopaholic. Sure, yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:58:34]:
But that's the only thing that I was that nutso about. So I would went online to look at how much was going for and yeah, $1,500 and people will pay it, man. I debated. I was like, you know what? And this was like, in that moment, I was just like, I might pay $800 maybe. And then I was like, Jim, you could do so many things with $800. Do not buy a coat for $800. You should not do that. And then I didn't. But that is my I must have it is the Pullover snow beach, the yellow and red. I would have also taken the black and white one, but oh, my goodness. Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for indulging the audience.
Tiff [00:59:26]:
Gym search.
Reginald Ferguson [00:59:26]:
Yeah. Polo addict.
Tiff [00:59:29]:
My God. I feel like we need to put him in.
Reginald Ferguson [00:59:33]:
No, he's functioning. I'm chill, man.
Tiff [00:59:35]:
Fashion rehab.
Reginald Ferguson [00:59:36]:
You don't think he's functioning? All right, look, I look dope. Okay?
Tiff [00:59:41]:
All right, reg, come on, let's drop it.
Reginald Ferguson [00:59:43]:
Oh, well, in the spirit of this topic, polo. Ralph Lauren, purple label, of course. Oh, yeah, of course. You gotta come on.
Tiff [00:59:54]:
I wouldn't expect anything less from you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:59:56]:
Yeah. If it works good for David Lauren, it works well for me. Boom. There you go, man.
Tiff [01:00:01]:
And that is a very fine suit made from very fine material.
Reginald Ferguson [01:00:06]:
Italian generally, if I recall.
Tiff [01:00:08]:
And it's all nothing synthetic ever. It's all natural fibers, just like Reg wool. That's true. Very good point there.
Reginald Ferguson [01:00:17]:
See what I did there?
Tiff [01:00:18]:
Yeah, I see what you did.
Reginald Ferguson [01:00:19]:
This is not my first podcast team.
Tiff [01:00:20]:
Do you have a particular suit in mind?
Reginald Ferguson [01:00:24]:
No, I saw one once. I actually was at Woodbury Common. Great place to go. I go there all the time. Really?
Tiff [01:00:32]:
I've been there once.
Reginald Ferguson [01:00:33]:
Okay. No, I didn't love it out there. All right. A friend of mine used to live right near there, so I'd hang out at his place and then we would go out there. Well, Search knows one thing that maybe TIFF, you know as well, even though you only had one visit there, it is impossible for you to go through all the stores in a day.
Tiff [01:00:53]:
I have tried, I've tried and I tried.
Reginald Ferguson [01:00:54]:
Virtually impossible.
Tiff [01:00:55]:
I have that mall mentality where I got to go to every store, pair and contrast, and then buy what's the most affordable.
Reginald Ferguson [01:01:01]:
I only need to go through one. Maybe over to Timberland.
Tiff [01:01:07]:
Oh, my gosh. Brilliant. All right, well, very good. I knew this was going to be a huge episode. Thank you, all your listeners, for hanging in there with us.
Reginald Ferguson [01:01:16]:
We got one last section, which I'm hoping has nothing to do with polo. Ralph Lauren. It's our fashion word of the day.
Tiff [01:01:25]:
Fashion world of the day people, which is when we each bring a word and we try to stump each other with a fashion word, and we spell it, we define it, and we use it in a sentence.
Reginald Ferguson [01:01:38]:
Yes, ma'am.
Tiff [01:01:38]:
Just like you're back at school. Makes it fun. All right, Reg, you go first. Hit me.
Reginald Ferguson [01:01:49]:
Fashion word. Sure. Ticket pocket.
Tiff [01:01:57]:
Ticket pocket.
Reginald Ferguson [01:01:59]:
Yeah.
Tiff [01:02:00]:
Well, I think spelling that's going to be easy. It's two words. Ticket. T-I-C-K-E-T.
Reginald Ferguson [01:02:05]:
Yes.
Tiff [01:02:05]:
Pocket. P-O-C-K-E-T.
Reginald Ferguson [01:02:08]:
Yes.
Tiff [01:02:09]:
Ticket pocket. Well, I would think it's a pocket that you put a ticket in.
Reginald Ferguson [01:02:16]:
Yeah. Very Amelia Bedelia sort of.
Tiff [01:02:20]:
Something tells me I do definition. I get it.
Reginald Ferguson [01:02:22]:
Yeah. It's a small pocket above the main.
Tiff [01:02:25]:
Hip pocket on a jacket that's called a ticket pocket.
Reginald Ferguson [01:02:30]:
Yes. I didn't know that.
Tiff [01:02:31]:
See, I always thought that was for you.
Reginald Ferguson [01:02:33]:
So does she get a bell for that? Your call.
Tiff [01:02:38]:
I always thought that was for your watch. Pocket watch?
Reginald Ferguson [01:02:42]:
No, on a suit jacket.
Tiff [01:02:45]:
Right.
Reginald Ferguson [01:02:45]:
You thought that was for your pocket watch. Well, you can put a pocket watch there and then string, chain. No, I'm not saying that you can't.
Tiff [01:02:52]:
Okay.
Reginald Ferguson [01:02:53]:
But really, if you're going to do that, you could do it that way. You could also do it through your vest if you had a three piece.
Tiff [01:02:59]:
Right, okay.
Reginald Ferguson [01:03:00]:
But now it's effectively called a ticket pocket. But back in the day, it was originally coins.
Tiff [01:03:06]:
Okay, that makes sense. Yeah. It's perfect for coins.
Reginald Ferguson [01:03:10]:
Yeah. I love it.
Tiff [01:03:11]:
All right, so I spelled it. You defined it. Thanks for clearing that up.
Reginald Ferguson [01:03:15]:
You're welcome.
Tiff [01:03:16]:
I'm going to use it in a sentence.
Reginald Ferguson [01:03:17]:
Do it.
Tiff [01:03:20]:
When I often go out at night, because apparently I do. I don't want to forget my jacket with my ticket pocket.
Reginald Ferguson [01:03:30]:
Oh, man. See? Yes. I don't know. That's like the same sentence from the yeah, it really is. Okay, you know what? No, thank you, sir. You're a lady, so trying to be either use my effect or your effect or both.
Tiff [01:03:52]:
I can do right now.
Reginald Ferguson [01:03:53]:
Bell and a buzer.
Tiff [01:03:54]:
Ready? This is super easy.
Reginald Ferguson [01:03:57]:
All right, so. Now I'm going to get kind of.
Tiff [01:03:59]:
Super goes in with what we were talking about earlier. Hero wise, we won't mention his name. Cable knit.
Reginald Ferguson [01:04:07]:
Cable knit.
Tiff [01:04:08]:
Cable knit.
Reginald Ferguson [01:04:09]:
Yes. C-A-B-L-E-K-N-I-T. It's a very specific weave pattern on sweaters.
Tiff [01:04:18]:
Very good. Very good.
Reginald Ferguson [01:04:20]:
That's the one. I knew I was going to say search. Why are you chiming in here?
Tiff [01:04:23]:
I know that one referring to a garment or accessory knitted using cable stitch where raised cables are twisted around one another. I'm sure everyone can visualize a cable knit sweater. They're very popular. But Polo, Ralph Lauren loves.
Reginald Ferguson [01:04:38]:
They sure do.
Tiff [01:04:39]:
Very nice cable knit sweater with a little pony on it. All right. You want to use it in a sentence?
Reginald Ferguson [01:04:46]:
Sure. I actually have two cable knit sweaters. One a V neck and one a crew neck. Boom.
Tiff [01:04:54]:
And it's a true story. I saw you in one of them.
Reginald Ferguson [01:04:56]:
Yeah, you did.
Tiff [01:04:58]:
It was red. Yes, a very nice red.
Reginald Ferguson [01:05:02]:
Thank you.
Tiff [01:05:03]:
All right, well, that's it for our episode today.
Reginald Ferguson [01:05:05]:
Man, that was extra action. Great, man. Thank you for having me as a guest.
Tiff [01:05:11]:
We want to thank you, Jim, for joining us.
Reginald Ferguson [01:05:14]:
Thank you, sir. That's our producer, who you've heard right, breaking down Poe, ralph Lauren on the Tip takeover.
Tiff [01:05:21]:
He doesn't just make us sound good, he brings good information to the table.
Reginald Ferguson [01:05:26]:
And stories, we like stories.
Tiff [01:05:27]:
Oh, yeah, the stories were great.
Reginald Ferguson [01:05:29]:
I had a couple.
