Reginald Ferguson [00:00:01]:
Hello, I'm Reg.
Tiff [00:00:02]:
And I'm TIFF. And we're the Fashion Geeks trying to make New York and the world.
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:06]:
Well, New York is the world.
Tiff [00:00:07]:
A little flyer, one outfit and podcast at a time.
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:17]:
Hey, everybody. Welcome back. Or first time. Welcome to the ride. I'm Reg.
Tiff [00:00:21]:
And I'm TIFF.
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:22]:
And we are the New York Fashion Geek. Yeah. Oh, yeah.
Tiff [00:00:27]:
We're happy to be doing this for yet another episode.
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:31]:
Absolutely.
Tiff [00:00:33]:
What have you been doing lately?
Reginald Ferguson [00:00:35]:
Well, I've been dealing with clients a little bit about myself. I'm the creator of New York Fashion Geek. It's a fashion consultancy here in New York City. Essentially what we do is take clients, particularly male clients, but we can deal with ladies as well and help them change or improve their look. We start from closet inventory all the way down to personal shopping and everything in between. And this is New York Fashion Week. So I'm on my very exciting.
Tiff [00:01:05]:
Very exciting. Thank you. So besides doing all of that with you, helping you with the podcast yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:01:14]:
You're the creator of the podcast.
Tiff [00:01:15]:
I'm also an ex costume designer, so I bring a little bit of history of fashion and a little bit of design approach to whatever we're talking about fashion wise. Like, I like to talk about fabric a lot.
Reginald Ferguson [00:01:32]:
You do?
Tiff [00:01:33]:
I like to touch fabric, as you know.
Reginald Ferguson [00:01:34]:
Yes.
Tiff [00:01:35]:
And speaking of touching fabric, get off my jacket, too.
Reginald Ferguson [00:01:40]:
It's embarrassing.
Tiff [00:01:43]:
If I was blindfolded, I bet I could tell.
Reginald Ferguson [00:01:46]:
Oh, I don't doubt that. No, your skill is your skill. Yeah, I don't have that.
Tiff [00:01:51]:
And I like to see how fashion fits the form of fashion. So that's what I'm bringing to the podcast and to your business, per se, shall we say. So, speaking of fabrics, as I was trying to lead in before, we had to talk about a recent experience oh, boy. That you had, Reg, that you absolutely kindly brought me in on.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:17]:
Oh, of course. You're my partner. You're my ride or die, so I can't do this without you. It's because of you that I'm doing.
Tiff [00:02:23]:
Oh, thanks, Shucks.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:25]:
We went to Reeves Reeves bespoke.
Tiff [00:02:30]:
But after what did you do first? You got to start at the beginning.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:34]:
What?
Tiff [00:02:34]:
You went to a sample sale.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:37]:
Okay.
Tiff [00:02:38]:
Sample sales are fun. We got to let the guys out there know. The everyday man has to know there are sample sales that you can get really nice stuff at at a very.
Reginald Ferguson [00:02:48]:
Good I mean, that's part of my service, right, is when we're oh, did I give away a no, no, absolutely. Matter of fact, at the podcast premiere party, we have the Nyfg postcards debut debut.
Tiff [00:03:08]:
Everybody could take one.
Reginald Ferguson [00:03:10]:
Absolutely glossy. Glossy. And it reads on their sample sales.
Tiff [00:03:18]:
And they are fun.
Reginald Ferguson [00:03:19]:
They are fun. They are fun. So to me, they're not really like they were when I was growing to it's funny you mentioned that topic. I'd like to give a very special shout out to a dear past friend of mine. Her name is Ina Samuels. When I went to NYU, when I went to Stern, she was a transfer from Fit and she was a force personality, fashion style. She was a beautiful human being. And she introduced she was older than me and she introduced a young Reginald Ferguson to his very first sample sale.
Tiff [00:04:09]:
Wow.
Reginald Ferguson [00:04:10]:
That sample sale was Willie Smith. Willyware, the provider of the sample sale is still in the game to this day. Soy for Haskin. I just want to give her so much love because she's no longer here. And this may sound funny, it may sound OD, but when I found out, I was so crushed because she was such a beautiful spirit, she was such a great person. Could I have learned about a sample sale and what it was eventually? Absolutely. But that doesn't matter because I learned it from her. And when I found out, oddly enough, it was during a Brooks Brothers sample sale, a big shout out to Caustic Man on Insta because that's your temple. And I went and bought a pair of blue suede Italian loafers in tribute to her because I wouldn't have this business if it wasn't for Ina Samuels. So big shout out, Ina. And to the Samuels family, I have so much love for you guys. I'm so sorry for your loss. So Mr. Reeves had a sample sale and I knew about it. And yes, when you are my client, if you are in town or I know what your look is and there's a brand that has a sample sale, we're going to go woohoo because that's part of the service. And if you can get something at bare minimum 75% off, that's a deal.
Tiff [00:05:47]:
That is definitely a deal.
Reginald Ferguson [00:05:49]:
Absolutely. So I heard it through the grapevine that David Reeves of Reeves Bespoke had a deal at his atelier over in Union Square. I rolled up in there, very nice gentleman, really cool, very down to earth, and he had a rod full of stuff. I came in with another gentleman. He thought we were together, but we weren't. He thought we were bloggers. We're not just podcasters, just fashion consultants, just fashion geeks. So I was checking out the stuff, some suits and sport jackets. I'm in the suit game and I aspired one. It was a dark green mohair suit.
Tiff [00:06:41]:
What, three piece and three piece? Not only three piece, but a collar.
Reginald Ferguson [00:06:49]:
Yes. A lapel to the vest on the which is not my steez. I want to really be honest, I've always been kind of want WA about.
Tiff [00:06:58]:
That because I'm like it's so very English.
Reginald Ferguson [00:07:01]:
Right?
Tiff [00:07:01]:
So very English.
Reginald Ferguson [00:07:02]:
But I also feel looking how I look. Yeah. I just feel like I was a king of comedy or like but he loved when I put his stuff on and he was, oh, you look great.
Tiff [00:07:20]:
Oh, my God, you sound just like him.
Reginald Ferguson [00:07:22]:
That's very kind. I'm sorry, people in the UK, I know you guys are out to get me based on that impression, but we started clicking. And to me, ultimately, this is a collabo, because I'm really hoping he's going to come down to do the podcast one day when we open up another topic to the show. And we did a fitting and it wasn't quite there. And that's fine because essentially this is a sample piece he was reviewing, the history he had almost forgotten about, because he had made that piece, I think, quite a while ago. And I was like, yo, if we're going to do this, we need some help. He was right. Right. So he was like, Stand there. The great thing now and Tiffany, you really should speak about this, because I cannot sew, ladies and gentlemen, I am very good at creating a look, putting things together, telling you what's right, what isn't right, what fits right, what fits improperly standards, rules of the road. But I don't know anything about a pattern. I don't know anything about a stitch. I don't have that skill. So you can't have everything. But that's why I'm here. Exactly. Because that's your game.
Tiff [00:08:33]:
Right.
Reginald Ferguson [00:08:33]:
So the funny thing was that now, as opposed to doing chalk or even pins, he's taking photos.
Tiff [00:08:42]:
Yes.
Reginald Ferguson [00:08:43]:
Essentially, he did some pinning, because this gentleman I want to talk a little bit about, more about David Reeves. Savile Row, trained from the age of 19, worked at Jeeves and Hawks. I forgot. Who else? I think richard Anderson.
Tiff [00:09:02]:
I can't remember.
Reginald Ferguson [00:09:03]:
He did say yeah, but definitely still.
Tiff [00:09:04]:
You can absolutely find it on yeah, yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:09:07]:
You can find him on the Insta. You can find him online. It's, I think. Reeves nyc.com. But he comes by this humbly and he considers himself the only salvo roll style in New York City. So that makes him unique.
Tiff [00:09:26]:
Yes.
Reginald Ferguson [00:09:27]:
So we did a fitting and then came back to try it on, and I was like, Well, I need a woman's eyes. So TIFF rolled up into the spot. TIFF, take it from here. What'd you see?
Tiff [00:09:43]:
I saw Reg in a green. It was it was stunning. The fabric, first of all, mohair. So for the everyday man, mohair may not be a common fabric.
Reginald Ferguson [00:09:55]:
I'm not the everyday man.
Tiff [00:09:57]:
No, but I want to explain what mohair is. It's a fiber from the Angora goat.
Reginald Ferguson [00:10:05]:
Because Angora wool comes from the rabbit.
Tiff [00:10:08]:
Yes, exactly. And it's two totally different fibers, and it's normally used along with silk or cotton. It's a very strong fiber and it's got a sheen to it. It's beautiful. And it was just a gorgeous fabric. And the color green was, I can't say olive, but it did have that sort of olive look to it. And it was just a nicely fitted it looked as if it was made for you. And let's talk on that, because it's bespoke and for the everyday man. What does bespoke mean? Bespoke means the measurements were taken and a pattern is drawn to your specification right.
Reginald Ferguson [00:10:54]:
Versus MTM, which is made to measure. This is created solely for you. A pattern is created solely for you. So when you're one of my clients, the one thing we're going to talk about is your price point, regardless of your look. But if we're talking about your look via a suit or a sport jacket, based on your price point, I'm going to know where to take you. And if you're balling out of control, you're doing bespoke.
Tiff [00:11:23]:
Yes. But what this is astounding is that is a bespoke suit that you tried on fit you so nicely. And I know I got there after a little tailoring was done in the back end.
Reginald Ferguson [00:11:33]:
Yeah. And we're still doing another round.
Tiff [00:11:35]:
Yeah. He said that sometimes it could take up to five different sessions correct. Of fittings, which I found astounding, because I've never fitted anyone five times. I mean, there have been times in my past costuming that it's close to it, but it just shows the attention to detail. It shows his desire to get it absolutely, perfectly right. And that's what I saw as well as he was pinning your arm's eye in the back and looking at the side seam difference from one side to the other and realizing what he needed to do. It was like, okay, I got it. And yeah, taking the picture in this day and age, he commented on how it's so easy now with the cell phones, that he could do that, because back in the day before cell phones yeah. You chalked it or you pinned it, and then you had to sort of remember, okay, what does this pin mean? And you take a little note as you're pinning, and it just sort of had to visualize it in your mind. And good tailors had no problems, have no problems doing that. And a lot of tailors to this very day, still do it that way.
Reginald Ferguson [00:12:38]:
Sure.
Tiff [00:12:42]:
The process of it was what was most fascinating to me, besides how good you looked in that suit.
Reginald Ferguson [00:12:48]:
Oh, thank you.
Tiff [00:12:49]:
I cannot say it enough as if it was made for you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:12:52]:
He loves me in his items. We tried a whole bunch of items, and I'm just hoping we just continue with a collab.
Tiff [00:13:03]:
That would be nice. Very nice. Maybe next time you can get that.
Reginald Ferguson [00:13:06]:
Chesterfield coat you were looking oh, yeah, I need a chesterfield coat like I need a hole in my head. But big shout out to Reeves. Looking forward to we'll give you guys an update at the next fitting.
Tiff [00:13:17]:
And as you stated, know, it's fashion show still week, and we've got some more fashion week still events going, and we'll be commenting on those in other episodes, too, as invitations roll in.
Reginald Ferguson [00:13:31]:
Oh, you're too kind. I hope so. I think I got two.
Tiff [00:13:34]:
I think so, too. And our podcast party, we have to talk about that, but we're going to give details after the fact. So just an elegant small gathering just to celebrate us doing this.
Reginald Ferguson [00:13:46]:
Yeah. No. Props to you for selecting the venue. The M bar at the Mansfield Hotel. Twelve west 44th street. 530 on. Come and join on.
Tiff [00:13:56]:
Be there.
Reginald Ferguson [00:13:56]:
I'm going to be fly.
Tiff [00:13:57]:
We're both going to be fly.
Reginald Ferguson [00:13:58]:
Absolutely.
Tiff [00:13:59]:
I'm going to be dressed kind of sort of like one of my fashion heroes.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:04]:
Oh, what a wonderful segue TIFF.
Tiff [00:14:08]:
Thanks.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:09]:
Who is the fashion hero of the day? Fashion, fashion.
Tiff [00:14:21]:
Fashion hero of the day.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:23]:
It's word of the day. Amalgam there. Sorry.
Tiff [00:14:26]:
Yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:26]:
Who's your passion hero?
Tiff [00:14:27]:
Audrey Hepburn.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:29]:
Whoa. Bam.
Tiff [00:14:31]:
Yes.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:31]:
You just came in and had a grand slam home run.
Tiff [00:14:36]:
She changed my world as far as what I grew up wearing, my life. You can look in the pictures of me growing up before Audrey and after Audrey.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:46]:
Really?
Tiff [00:14:47]:
And it all happened because of my mother. It all happened because of the movies. My mother was a big movie person.
Reginald Ferguson [00:14:54]:
Love movies.
Tiff [00:14:55]:
Yeah. Whenever movies came out on TV, we watched them. The classics as well as the current. But at this point, for me, growing up in the 80s, when I really started getting into fashion, the early 80s, audrey Hepburn movies were classics.
Reginald Ferguson [00:15:12]:
Sure.
Tiff [00:15:13]:
And of course, the one that was most classic that I absolutely am most in love with is Breakfast at Tiffany's.
Reginald Ferguson [00:15:19]:
Of course, go lightly because of my name.
Tiff [00:15:22]:
My name's know? So I'm like, I have to check this out. And just her character. And I know it's her character and not necessarily her, but she absolutely took the fashion from all of her films and made it her own. I read one article how she even when working with the costume designer for Roman Holiday, she sent a message back to the costume designer. I can't remember the name of the.
Reginald Ferguson [00:15:51]:
Edith Head is the costume designer for Roman Holiday.
Tiff [00:15:54]:
Dang Reg. You were so good. But she sent her a message with this dress, the one that she's wearing in the scene where she's eating ice cream on steps. She wanted to use a wider belt and a higher collar, higher neck and collar. And I tell you, that's exactly what Edith Had did. And it was beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. What I love most about Audrey Hepburn and what I incorporate into my closet to this very day are the A line. I love the A line as far as dresses go. But the.
Reginald Ferguson [00:16:29]:
Flats with the black pants with the socks, you know, there's a story about that. I don't know what movie that is, and I'm sure you do. And your mama. But the movie she's dancing that whole set up, that whole kit that you just described, I can't remember the details, but she argued about the color of the socks with the director.
Tiff [00:16:49]:
No, I did not know that.
Reginald Ferguson [00:16:50]:
Yes. And the director was like, no, your color choice is wrong. Please use these color socks.
Tiff [00:16:58]:
Wow.
Reginald Ferguson [00:16:58]:
And she relented. And at the end, she came back to him and acknowledged she was like, you were right.
Tiff [00:17:04]:
I don't know if you because it popped you. Can you picture that in your brain? Picture that I wish I had it on my phone. That picture of her dancing in that scene, wearing that outfit with the white socks.
Reginald Ferguson [00:17:15]:
Yeah, I know.
Tiff [00:17:15]:
It vaguely made me think of Michael Jackson. Michael Jackson would wear the white socks. The white glitter socks.
Reginald Ferguson [00:17:23]:
Motown 25.
Tiff [00:17:24]:
Sometimes color lost my mind. I was like, wow. Enduring. Enduring fashion.
Reginald Ferguson [00:17:32]:
Right. Classic. It's the whole argument. Style versus fashion. Right.
Tiff [00:17:36]:
And she also wore that was something that I absolutely loved. Besides the aline and the flats and the pants. That kind of sort of she didn't just wear the pencil pants, but that.
Reginald Ferguson [00:17:49]:
Was also no, I mean, she did whatever she wanted. I mean, first of all, she was petite.
Tiff [00:17:54]:
Yes.
Reginald Ferguson [00:17:55]:
When you're petite, you could do anything you want.
Tiff [00:17:57]:
Yes, you can. You are fashion designer's dream.
Reginald Ferguson [00:18:00]:
My late grandmother was petite.
Tiff [00:18:01]:
Yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:18:01]:
We've been going through stuff in the house and a friend of mine was like, wow, she was thin. She was tall, but she was thin.
Tiff [00:18:09]:
I used to be very, very petite. And that's why I really loved this fashion because it looked good on shorter, petite, framed women. This is all of this stuff. But another thing that's notable, the boat collar. So she really brought the boat collar to a forefront. I can't wear it. That doesn't really quite work on me. But it's so stunning the way it accents a woman's neck.
Reginald Ferguson [00:18:33]:
Heck, I have one as a guy.
Tiff [00:18:37]:
Yeah, that sailor look going on. There we go.
Reginald Ferguson [00:18:41]:
J. Crew.
Tiff [00:18:42]:
Because that's when it looks good. To this very day, most of my stuff is very simple. So her designs, the things that she liked to wear were very simple. She didn't go crazy with accessories. She didn't go crazy with patterns. She just was simply dressed and very casual. When she was casual and elegant, she was elegant, simple elegance. And actually, that's the term I used for my wedding, was simple elegance. That's what I wanted. And my dress kind of sort of fell in that kind of sort of Audrey Hepburn look.
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:19]:
Nice.
Tiff [00:19:20]:
Yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:21]:
One thing I just want to say, because this is really your floor, because this is your hero. It's not mine is we can't have this conversation and ignore the collaboration between she and, you know, we mentioned this Eat of head thing, even about that movie. There's a lot of controversy there because, really, those were Givenchy's designs.
Tiff [00:19:49]:
Really?
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:50]:
Yeah, absolutely. You could look it up. There's no question about this.
Tiff [00:19:53]:
And she also worked with the House of Chanel as well.
Reginald Ferguson [00:19:55]:
I don't know so much about the collabor with Chanel, but I am here to tell you, her de facto designer du jour was always givenchy from the beginning to the end.
Tiff [00:20:07]:
So I have found my designer, then.
Reginald Ferguson [00:20:09]:
Given the late Just, who just passed.
Tiff [00:20:12]:
This year look to the vintage stuff, because that's what I would probably go for.
Reginald Ferguson [00:20:16]:
Audrey Hepburn was his muse. Got to know that.
Tiff [00:20:25]:
I do now. Thank you, fashion gee.
Reginald Ferguson [00:20:28]:
No, thank you. No, this is great. This is great. We should have alterations. It's not all about mine. So it's great to hear about this. And clearly, she's iconic. She conjures up these images. But this is great. I mean, I'm literally seeing your face like you're rosy. I get all but no, that's great, because that's what this segment is about. You all. So when you have one, hit us up at podcasts at NY fashion geek, because we want to know yours. We want to know who makes your cheeks rosy. We want to know who makes you excited, because that's important. That's what's up.
Tiff [00:21:07]:
Because your fashion hero might be one of ours as well, right?
Reginald Ferguson [00:21:11]:
Or not. So we want to learn.
Tiff [00:21:13]:
We want to learn from so moving on with Audrey Hepburn. She had a lot of I must have it items.
Reginald Ferguson [00:21:25]:
Yes, she did a line. Pearls, flats, cigarette holder, flats. Flats.
Tiff [00:21:31]:
The flat shoes, you cannot think about. I can't say it enough.
Reginald Ferguson [00:21:34]:
Right.
Tiff [00:21:34]:
Flat shoes.
Reginald Ferguson [00:21:35]:
It really liz is style, and I.
Tiff [00:21:37]:
Don'T wear a lot of heels, so I thank her for that. I thank her a lot. But let's get back to men's fashion and let's get back to men's items, fashion items that must be had. Reg for our next segment.
Reginald Ferguson [00:21:55]:
I must have it habits. Have it. The I must have it item of the day is Chelsea boots.
Tiff [00:22:06]:
Yes. Oh, my God. I'm so excited. I'm geeking out about this because it is so historically. Hello. My thing is the history of fashion and costume. The Chelsea boot goes all the way back to the Victorian era.
Reginald Ferguson [00:22:25]:
Yes.
Tiff [00:22:26]:
And it hasn't really changed much since.
Reginald Ferguson [00:22:28]:
No. Vulcanized rubber.
Tiff [00:22:33]:
Yeah. The first thing they breathe. They don't breathe really, but they do certainly do look slick. And what they are is it's a slip on boot. Yes, it's a slip on boot with two gussets, one on each side that are elasticized. And the history of this is completely fascinating. It's all practical. In the day of Queen Victoria, she was a huge rider of horses, and she wanted a boot without laces because her laces kept getting caught in the stirrup.
Reginald Ferguson [00:23:05]:
Oh, functionality.
Tiff [00:23:08]:
Functionality. So the maker of the Chelsea boot, j. Sparks hall, created the Chelsea boot so that she could slip in and out of the stirrups without anything catching. And if you look on the elastic inset on the gussets, you can see the interlocking stirrups. That's where the logo comes from, because they were made a boot to go in and out of stirrups. The logo looks like this. I'll show you. It's one stirrup and then a little right next to it overlaid is another stirrup.
Reginald Ferguson [00:23:44]:
Look at that.
Tiff [00:23:45]:
So that's on all the boots. I just happened to come across that. I didn't know that ahead of time. Just to let you know.
Reginald Ferguson [00:23:51]:
That's very slick.
Tiff [00:23:54]:
That's where my fashion geek attube comes in. I research, I do things. So that's the history and it's very practical back in the day. Let's talk about why it is a must have item for today. For today's? Everyday.
Reginald Ferguson [00:24:09]:
Man Because style means differentiation. And you can slice your boot so many different ways. You could have a tim, you could have a fry. What I like about the Chelsea boot, and I have two, of course, two pairs, black and brown staples. Yeah, you hit it on the head. When I'm with a client, I think what's really important is, as I like to say, think of me as a personal trainer for fashion.
Tiff [00:24:44]:
I love that.
Reginald Ferguson [00:24:45]:
So the more time you invest with me, the deeper your wardrobe is going.
Tiff [00:24:52]:
To be and the more in shape, fashion wise, you're going to be absolutely right, because we want shape.
Reginald Ferguson [00:24:58]:
Yeah. We want you to be Cock Diesel in fashion.
Tiff [00:25:00]:
Be what?
Reginald Ferguson [00:25:01]:
Cock Diesel. Search nose. So that's why he nodded his head. That's all right, TIFF, we'll give you notes later.
Tiff [00:25:08]:
Thank you. I appreciate that.
Reginald Ferguson [00:25:09]:
Catch me up. We want you to be prepared for every situation from a fashion standpoint. From a style standpoint. So I feel it's required it's required footwear. It's a slimming boot. I don't care what your width is, particularly if you have black, because black is a slimming color. When I was growing up, I saw the Beatles with them, so we called them Beetle boots.
Tiff [00:25:35]:
And that's actually a name. I mean, they were called Beetle boots because the Beatles requested that they customize it with a Cuban heel, which is a little higher stacked heel and a pointier toe. And that's when that line was called. The Beetle boot.
Reginald Ferguson [00:25:52]:
Gotcha so.
Tiff [00:25:53]:
That's when it went from Chelsea to the Beetle boot.
Reginald Ferguson [00:25:55]:
Gotcha. So, you know, growing up, I saw them, I remember talking to one of my sisters about them, and she was like, yeah, you need to get some. So I want to give a big shout out to Lenore Washington. She was the one who made me get them.
Tiff [00:26:12]:
Thanks, Lenore.
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:13]:
Absolutely. No, but she's always been my ace for stuff like that. And I'm going to go back in time. I bought both my pairs, which I still have at Oto, tootsie. Plowhound.
Tiff [00:26:25]:
Oh, my God. Really?
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:27]:
On West Broadway? Yes.
Tiff [00:26:29]:
I remember that place.
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:31]:
On a tax free Saturday.
Tiff [00:26:33]:
I got to love the tax free Saturday.
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:36]:
Going back in time.
Tiff [00:26:37]:
Wow. How long ago was that?
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:40]:
Was that cuomo era? I think that was the original Cuomo era administration.
Tiff [00:26:45]:
And you, of course, still have them.
Reginald Ferguson [00:26:47]:
I still have them. My black ones need some TLC from the leather spa. Big shout out to the leather spa. I need to go there. Particularly for one boot versus the whole pair of the black ones. And another shout out to Alfred Sargents. Mine are made by Alfred Sargent back in the UK. Classic. Classic shoe brand. Been around since 1899. Nice for north.
Tiff [00:27:18]:
Not your pair, of course. No, just want to make sure make sure that's clear. Yeah, no, I mean, you do go way back. Rich, but not that far back.
Reginald Ferguson [00:27:25]:
No, not that from they're a little old shop in Northamptonshire.
Tiff [00:27:31]:
I love that.
Reginald Ferguson [00:27:32]:
That, you know, I you got your.
Tiff [00:27:35]:
Geek attitude on too. Doing a little research.
Reginald Ferguson [00:27:37]:
No, I don't. And mine are day night souls. And that means and no, it's a classic manufacturer that makes a very durable sole.
Tiff [00:27:52]:
Okay.
Reginald Ferguson [00:27:54]:
And I've never replaced the sole. The sole has never been replaced.
Tiff [00:27:57]:
Holy cow. Really?
Reginald Ferguson [00:27:58]:
Yeah. Seriously.
Tiff [00:27:59]:
So this is an investment. Very nice investment as well.
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:03]:
Absolutely.
Tiff [00:28:04]:
Never goes out of style.
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:05]:
No, it's a classic. You hit on something, a previous episode when you were talking about the Jacks when I was talking well, we were talking about the Jack Spade messenger bag, and you're like, well, if you keep it for four or five years and I was like, what? No, the bare minimum for everything is ten years.
Tiff [00:28:19]:
Okay?
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:19]:
I mean, not everything. Like, a shirt is not going to last you ten years being a dress shirt. But as Reeves had mentioned, even so, if you get four or five years out of a dress shirt, you're blessed. Which means you need a rotation, gentlemen. The more shirts you have, then you mitigate the damage. So that's why you need to have at least 20 dress shirts. Don't freak out.
Tiff [00:28:42]:
Michael. Stop listening now.
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:45]:
I'm just keeping it real.
Tiff [00:28:46]:
Ask my husband.
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:47]:
If you have a rotation, you're going to mitigate damage.
Tiff [00:28:51]:
And it makes total sense. Absolutely. Dry cleaning is rough on fabric, right?
Reginald Ferguson [00:28:56]:
You only dry clean if you have a painfully obvious stain.
Tiff [00:28:59]:
That's another smell you must dry clean.
Reginald Ferguson [00:29:02]:
But that's another tip, man. You have a suit, you have a sport jacket, you have slacks. Don't just take it in. Oh, I'm going to take it in weekly. Monthly. No, you take it in when it's dirty. When it's dirty, that's when you take it in, because the chemicals from the process will beat down your fabric.
Tiff [00:29:21]:
And it would also affect the way it looks, too, with that, eventually, any fabric with any kind of sheen, any really nice fabric, it's going to lose its sheen over time from the chemicals.
Reginald Ferguson [00:29:33]:
Exactly. Yeah.
Tiff [00:29:34]:
That's our little care consultation.
Reginald Ferguson [00:29:36]:
Absolutely.
Tiff [00:29:38]:
That's free tidbit right there. Absolutely.
Reginald Ferguson [00:29:40]:
No, well, listen, our consultations are free, so take that and run with it and run over to your instant hit me up on the DM so we could really do some business.
Tiff [00:29:51]:
And that's exactly what I was going to say New York fashion geek on instagram. So I think it's time for us to move on to our final segment of the program, which is called fashion word of the day.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:10]:
It fashion word of the day.
Tiff [00:30:18]:
So are you ready?
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:19]:
Yes, I am.
Tiff [00:30:20]:
I got a good one, too. You're looking like you got it. So what this segment is is we both bring a word, a fashion word, and we try to challenge each other with, do you know this word? And I always like this because this is fun.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:35]:
You like it because you want me to spell.
Tiff [00:30:37]:
I do. I like spelling.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:38]:
Ridiculous.
Tiff [00:30:39]:
I think spelling is fun. And it also helps the listeners to google what we're talking about.
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:43]:
That's fine. That's fair.
Tiff [00:30:45]:
In case they want to research it a little bit further. So who wants to go first? You want to go first?
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:50]:
I'll go first. Okay.
Tiff [00:30:51]:
You want to give me the fashion word of the day?
Reginald Ferguson [00:30:54]:
I'm glad we will. Tiffany? Collar stay.
Tiff [00:30:58]:
Did you say collar stay?
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:01]:
Yes, I did.
Tiff [00:31:02]:
TIFF oh, my goodness. You were reading my mind for an episode subject.
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:08]:
Okay.
Tiff [00:31:09]:
The collar stay.
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:10]:
I'm glad we are really in. Cynica's co host. That's important.
Tiff [00:31:12]:
So the collar stay, I'm going to define it first.
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:15]:
Yeah, you got it.
Tiff [00:31:16]:
The collar stay is a very important fashion item that a lot of men don't keep. They toss them. And basically what that is is a little sliver of plastic that's inserted into this tiny little pocket that most guys don't know exists under the collar points of your shirts. Did I get it?
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:35]:
Bang.
Tiff [00:31:37]:
Yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:37]:
But it doesn't have to be plastic. It could be metal because I have metal ones.
Tiff [00:31:40]:
Oh, that's right. That's true. The metal ones.
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:42]:
It's just material, but yes, and it's.
Tiff [00:31:45]:
Spelled C-O-L-L-A-R. Space stay. S-T-A-Y.
Reginald Ferguson [00:31:51]:
Yes.
Tiff [00:31:52]:
Collar stay. And it's one of those words that the word is what it is. There's a grammar thing about that where the word says what it is, so it doesn't have to be that much defined. So, Reg, you have a collar stay in every single one of your collars?
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:10]:
Absolutely. Every dress shirt has a collar stay. I mean, that's required.
Tiff [00:32:15]:
So I don't understand why sometimes men will take them out.
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:20]:
I think men will take them out as a fashion choice. Maybe they want their points to not be as rigid, and that's fine, and that's fair.
Tiff [00:32:30]:
Like, if you're wearing a shirt without a tie, you're going to go casual. Would you wear a shirt with collar stays without a tie? Absolutely. You can do that.
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:40]:
To me, the rigidity of the points is extremely important.
Tiff [00:32:44]:
And you keep the collar stays in without that tie or you want to.
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:47]:
Absolutely.
Tiff [00:32:48]:
You've got a more relaxed fit without the tie. So why not take the collar stays out to relax the points of the collar?
Reginald Ferguson [00:32:54]:
Teacher zone. I'm about rigidity.
Tiff [00:32:58]:
So basically, in this department, you can do whatever you want, whatever you're feeling, right?
Reginald Ferguson [00:33:02]:
Yes, but I'm all about rules and standards. And obviously rules and standards are made to be broken and altered. There's no question about that. But I'm an old school cat. I always acknowledge that. So collar stays are to keep the points of the shirt rigid, pristine, uniform. I like that. If it has it, there's going to be a pair of them in there. It's just that simple. You have other shirts in which you don't need that. A button down collar, for example.
Tiff [00:33:35]:
Because it stays. Because it's buttoned.
Reginald Ferguson [00:33:37]:
Exactly. You got it. Look how that worked.
Tiff [00:33:41]:
All right, are you ready for I'm Going to My Word sort of goes back to the beginning of the episode when we talked about our time at David Reeves.
Reginald Ferguson [00:33:54]:
Sure.
Tiff [00:33:54]:
David Reeves working on your suit. And my term has something to do with the fit. And the term is balance.
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:06]:
Balance?
Tiff [00:34:08]:
Balance.
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:09]:
Balance. Like a balance beam.
Tiff [00:34:12]:
Like a balance beam.
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:13]:
Okay.
Tiff [00:34:14]:
Nothing like a balance, right?
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:15]:
There you go again with these words, with multiple definitions.
Tiff [00:34:19]:
I like to do it that way.
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:20]:
You got me again.
Tiff [00:34:24]:
All right, you could spell it. I'll give you props.
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:26]:
P-A-L-A-N-C-E. Mom.
Tiff [00:34:29]:
Okay, very good. Reg. Balance. Very good. So what the balance is, and I even said this to you when I was looking at you.
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:37]:
Yes.
Tiff [00:34:38]:
Do you remember that?
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:39]:
Yes, you did.
Tiff [00:34:40]:
Can you remember now what I said it was?
Reginald Ferguson [00:34:42]:
Well, you were talking about the balance of the jacket and my shoulders.
Tiff [00:34:47]:
Correct. Yeah. So what the balance is it's basically what this definition says. It's the scale on which the success of a finished coat is measured. So the length at the front and the length at the back of the jacket should be parallel. So if it's not, then there's a problem with the fit in the shoulder, so that's when you look at a really nice coat, a suit coat, or any kind of jacket that you're wearing, you don't want the back to be high or the front to be high because then it's not fitted properly. So you want the balance of the.
Reginald Ferguson [00:35:25]:
Jacket to be parallel. Very nice.
Tiff [00:35:27]:
Yeah.
Reginald Ferguson [00:35:28]:
You learn something new every day.
Tiff [00:35:29]:
Yes. I didn't know that well, to be honest with you. I knew about it in my design and making these things, but I had to look up the word, so I had to remember what the word was. And it makes sense that it's balanced. If you think about it, it's another one of those words that says what it is.
Reginald Ferguson [00:35:53]:
Well, now we know. And no one's half the battle.
Tiff [00:35:56]:
Boom.
Reginald Ferguson [00:35:56]:
And that's a wrap. Thank you so much for listening. We hope you had fun. And down for another one. Please tell your friends about us. Special shout out goes to our producer Search.
