Reginald Ferguson [00:00:06]: Well, New York the world. Tiff [00:00:07]: A little flyer, one outfit Reginald Ferguson [00:00:09]: -- In podcast. -- Tiff [00:00:10]: at a time. Reginald Ferguson [00:00:16]: Hey, everybody. I'm Reg. Welcome back. Or if it's the first time, welcome to the ride to my side. Here's my partner, Tiff. Tiff [00:00:23]: Hi. Reginald Ferguson [00:00:24]: Hi. Tiff [00:00:25]: Glad to be back. Excited excited to, work on our 2nd episode. Reginald Ferguson [00:00:32]: Yes. Episode 2, The Deuce. I'm Reg Ferguson. I am the creator of New York Fashion Geek because the fashion console and see here in NYC. Essentially, what we do is we take men particularly, but obviously we can work on woman as well. and just change their look. Whatever look that you're seeking, we can improve upon it. We go from closet inventory, literally to personal shopping. And our motto has always be fly. Tiff [00:00:57]: And we're here to talk about that, and, and expand upon what you do for your business and, I'm here to help you with that as well as to, encourage conversation about fashion for the everyday man. you know, talking about different aspects, the clothing, you know, the style, the, what's happening today, that kind of thing. Adding a little color commentary to the, to the podcast. Reginald Ferguson [00:01:30]: I didn't see that one coming. Caucasian lady said the African American man. Tiff [00:01:36]: I was speaking in baseball term. actually. Reginald Ferguson [00:01:38]: Oh, okay. That was very nice. I already was thinking Paul McCartney and Stevie wonder. This is, you know, gotta bring it back. Tiff [00:01:47]: I would sing it. I would sing that song, but it's going I totally drew a blank. Reginald Ferguson [00:01:51]: No. No. Really? No. I mean, I had the lyric for it. I was gonna set you up. Tiff [00:01:54]: Oh, okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:01:55]: You know, living together in perfect harmony. Fashionably. Tiff [00:01:59]: Yeah. Always fashionable. Right? So, let's dive right into it. you know, talking about, your business and, and what you're doing. So this week is New York Fashion Week? Reginald Ferguson [00:02:13]: Yes. Really happy to have that because this is our 1 year anniversary as a business. I launched this business the 1st day of fashion week, did it with a a fashion show, with a partner of mine who was totally blown up to the stratosphere, rocks, rocks and holdren, AK shop with rocks. A year later, here I am with my biz, trying to blow up black rocks, but the great thing is a year later, I'm getting a little bit more into the New York Fashion Week space. Today, I went to the Bruno Molly opening. In SoHo. In SoHo. You beat me to it. Absolutely. Right there on Wooster between Prince and Spring. Really nice. I mean, right there in the mix with everybody, with all the names, shout out Tiff [00:03:03]: to you. I wish I could've join you. I was excited. I was excited that, you got an invitation for that. Uh-uh. Reginald Ferguson [00:03:07]: Yeah. I was really -- Tiff [00:03:08]: I'm sad. I couldn't join you. Reginald Ferguson [00:03:09]: I was really flattered. I bumped into a brother there. I don't know his last name. His name is Craig. Give me a shout out, Craig. I hope you're listening. And He laughed at me because he was like, he peeped out my game. I'm rocking a linen suit again. because this is the 2 week rotation. So, yes, because I don't want you guys thinking I'm wearing the same suit every time we rock the mic. Tiff [00:03:37]: It just happens to be the same. Reginald Ferguson [00:03:38]: It's 2 week. I have a 2 week rotation y'all. Tiff [00:03:41]: But it's a different tie. Completely different tie. Reginald Ferguson [00:03:44]: Absolutely. Tiff [00:03:45]: And shirt, I think. sure. Yeah. Well, yeah. Reginald Ferguson [00:03:48]: I mean, I'm not a Tiff [00:03:49]: you weren't pink and yellow, and I love that combination. Oh my god. Reginald Ferguson [00:03:52]: -- a little blue in it too. Tiff [00:03:53]: Oh, yeah. Very nice. Reginald Ferguson [00:03:55]: slim slimy. Tiff [00:03:56]: Very nice. Reginald Ferguson [00:03:57]: Because I I usually have a more, moderate width, which probably harkens back to my late grandfather. But I was like, no. I'm gonna I'm gonna really represent here. Tiff [00:04:08]: Trendy. Reginald Ferguson [00:04:09]: No. I mean, just, well, of the time, You know, I I have I have varying wusser ties. I have mad ties. I have enough ties for the rest of my life. Tiff [00:04:18]: I believe you. Reginald Ferguson [00:04:19]: On my tie rack, I'm stacking doubles and triples. Tiff [00:04:23]: I hope my husband's not listening because he constantly thinks he needs a new tie, and I constantly telling me it's plenty. Reginald Ferguson [00:04:30]: So -- Your husband constantly needs to avoid working with my services. That's all I'm saying, Michael. I know you can't help me institutionally with your, you know, with your j o. Tiff [00:04:44]: Oh, he might. Reginald Ferguson [00:04:45]: Oh, I'm I will turn those. Tiff [00:04:48]: Still working on that. Reginald Ferguson [00:04:49]: Oh, I'm really appreciative because I will turn those guys around. Tiff [00:04:52]: And I I believe you. 100%. No. Reginald Ferguson [00:04:54]: I really and not only that. I do. As as my boy, Blaze, Blaze Manceus, giving you a shout out social abstinence, you can check him out on the podcast world. I'm a walk in advertisement in his words. and that's really flattering. But the reason why I'm so keen if I ever was fortunate enough to work with your husband and his crew is because, unbeknownst to you, I have family that works, worked because they're retired now in civil service. So Tiff's husband is a is a fire eater. And -- Tiff [00:05:30]: A fire eater? Yeah. Reginald Ferguson [00:05:32]: And, my two uncles my uncle Richard and my uncle Sonny are retired detectives, NYPD, BXTF, and the 43 and the 48. So you know, I couldn't be more more geeked about doing something like that pun intended. I would love to do that because -- Tiff [00:05:52]: Oh, we're working on it. Reginald Ferguson [00:05:53]: Yeah. and also Working on making it happen. My my aunt, also, civil service, you know, school teacher, New York Public School. So any anything about that, I'm about that. Tiff [00:06:04]: Well, we'll absolutely because, firefighters appeared on Project runway junior a couple of years back. Reginald Ferguson [00:06:09]: What? Tiff [00:06:09]: Yeah. My husband and I were one of the lucky ones to get chosen to, to participate. So, they are game. It's just a matter of, you know, timing. Reginald Ferguson [00:06:20]: I'm I'm I'm ready. I'm ready. Whatever whatever they need, I can I can do it. I can I can make it happen. But Let's really get back into it. So I went to the Bruno Molly store opening on Booster. Had a really great time. Tiff [00:06:37]: We had a DJ there, you said. Right? Reginald Ferguson [00:06:39]: There was a DJ. Tiff [00:06:39]: It's like a full on party in a in a in a new store. Yeah. Reginald Ferguson [00:06:43]: I mean, that's how it works. I mean, I I've had experiences like that prior to launching, my brand, but really cool vibe. Got to take photos. I'll post them on the insta eventually. Really nice product. What people don't know is that I rock Molly's I don't know. I'll say like this. I rock Molly's pre OJ quote. And that's real. And that's gonna be pertinent to my story about my experience there. meant some really nice people. I wanna give a big shout out. She may be coming to our launch party. A big shout out to Rebecca Weber. of the Lasagoretta wine brand back in Italy. She was really nice. to me, gave me a lot of love, showed me some, took some photos of me, and we just really had a nice wrap, talked to some people. This this brother Craig, who I mentioned earlier, he piqued my sis. And, really, it was kinda like giving me a hard time because he was casual. He said, oh, man. I was gonna rock a suit, but you rocked and you so fly. And then I told him, he was like, oh, you're really looking forward to the whole week and everything. I said, well, you know, I'm I'm really just happy to be here. He said, you sound like a politician. But I it's really true because -- Tiff [00:07:55]: You have those skills for sure. Reginald Ferguson [00:07:58]: I'm I'm of the people. There's no question about that in my mind. but the most important thing is I will not be going out every night. I'm not that fortunate. I'm not in that loop. maybe I will be, or maybe I won't be, but I was really flattered to attend this event. Tiff [00:08:15]: I was excited when you told me you got the invitation. I was like, yes. Reginald Ferguson [00:08:18]: Yeah. Tiff [00:08:18]: So, Reginald Ferguson [00:08:19]: Really nice looking at the shoes, the sneakers, the accessories, the sport jackets, lot of love. Tiff [00:08:25]: And it makes you feel like you're really getting into, you know, you're getting the entree into the fashion world is which is what you really, really want, which Reginald Ferguson [00:08:32]: is our intention. Absolutely. Tiff [00:08:33]: That's what we want. Reginald Ferguson [00:08:34]: No. Abs absolutely. It was great meeting other people and kinda staring and comparing. But as I was leaving to come here busting my hump on the train, hoping the MTA went my way. I had noticed a little bit earlier. I saw 2 guys, and they had Lomo magazine. I'm not a subscriber. I keep magazines in business. I probably mentioned that before. It's true. Weekly, monthlies. Tiff [00:09:02]: You always have a magazine every time I see you. Reginald Ferguson [00:09:04]: Yes. It's amazing. Yes. And it's usually rolled up. I look like a basketball coach. So -- Like, you're, that's so true. But Lomo, you can't do that. Lomo, you could actually -- Tiff [00:09:14]: It's almost as big as Vogue's, that big summer issue with that big -- Oh. Reginald Ferguson [00:09:20]: -- Tiff [00:09:20]: thick Bible they put out in here. Right. Reginald Ferguson [00:09:22]: You could actually use this at the barbershop for a toddler. No no question. So I saw, like, 1 or 2 guys they had. I realized they were in the loop because I didn't see any goodie bags or anything. It wasn't seeking that. And that was fine. I'm running out to do the podcast, and I see at the front of the store display table, the woman's was the woman's stuff the lines were in the in the front of the store and in the back of the house so to speak with the men's, I happen to see under a table a stack of magazines. why not add to my collection that I already have in my crib? Tiff [00:09:56]: Absolutely. Why not? Reginald Ferguson [00:09:58]: I tucked underneath the table I'm looking around. I see 4 different covers. I'm thinking that 4 different issues. I kinda start stacking, but they're so heavy. And I go, I know I'm not taking all four. Am I gonna slap them in my bag, which is gonna make my shoulder bag heavy, rocking my camo camo shoulder bag today? Tiff [00:10:15]: Oh, I was looking for the the Jack Spade? Reginald Ferguson [00:10:18]: No. No Jack Spade today. No Jack Spade today. That's Manhattan Portage, the original, keeping it real. And then all of a sudden, this gentleman who I saw earlier, He's either the manager or something, some relation. He was like, they're all the same. I said, oh, okay. So I'll take one. They're all the same. So take 1. I said, well, I'll take 1. They're all the same. So I'm gonna take 1. Tiff [00:10:44]: little broken record thing going on. Reginald Ferguson [00:10:46]: It was Abby Castello. And I took my 1, and I walked out. the reason why I wanna discuss this is because I am a guest at your home. You don't know my clientele. You don't know me. I haven't been rude. I didn't knock people over to get a drink. I'm grown. I was chilling. met people from the met someone else from the brand, made made, you know, met miss Weber, had a great time, But now all of a sudden, you're casting me in a light because you think I'm not worthy to be in your store. That's a no no. In the words of my late grandfather, I am the consumer. And not only that, I represent a clientele. that easily I can refer this brand. If I'm telling you, I literally have had, in my life, a beautiful pair slip on Molly Brown Loafers. What is the incentive for me now to recall this brand as a recommendation to a client. Tiff [00:12:00]: It's unfortunate. Reginald Ferguson [00:12:02]: It's very real, I think, for people who look like me. and it's unnecessary. I've had wonderful times in Italy. Everyone knows that I wanna give a big shout out to my my buddy, Daniella, who's Roman, who's still out there. Can't wait to go back. But that one moment, if I wasn't in such good spirits and also literally running on the deadline to do this podcast. It could have went a different way, but to our producer search his comments prerecording, he was looking for a fight this individual. I was not. I had no interest. You Tiff [00:12:40]: want a magazine? Reginald Ferguson [00:12:41]: because I love magazines. Tiff [00:12:43]: That's all you wanted. Reginald Ferguson [00:12:43]: That's all I wanted. -- magazine. And that's all I got. And I got the one with Pharrell on the cover. wanna let you guys know this. Yeah. It's Tiff [00:12:51]: hot. It's it's close-up. Reginald Ferguson [00:12:55]: Absolutely. It's a lovely shot. Tiff [00:12:56]: Profile shot. Reginald Ferguson [00:12:57]: -- relaunch with Ferrell Williams, really like that. But again, everybody, please. We're not coming in to bum rush. We're not coming in the wreck show. -- Tiff [00:13:08]: coming in. You were leaving. Reginald Ferguson [00:13:10]: Right. And I was invited. Tiff [00:13:11]: Yes. You were. Reginald Ferguson [00:13:12]: There was a list. I gave my last name. I was greeted. I was cordial to the person, and I was cordial to everybody. So Bruno Molly, don't do that again. That's it. So let's talk about other stuff. I know Tiff, you're very upset. about my about my other adventure. Tiff [00:13:35]: Oh, yeah. Another adventure without me, but that's okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:13:40]: I -- It was not it was not personal. Tiff [00:13:43]: I know. I know. Reginald Ferguson [00:13:44]: Did my annual pilgrimage to Afro punk? Woo hoo. Oh my gosh. love going to afropunk. I wanna give some special shout outs there to Jocelyn and Matthew, the creators, the founders of afropunk. I remember when this started back in the day, I don't know, over 10 years now? Tiff [00:14:04]: Yeah. It's been a while. Reginald Ferguson [00:14:05]: Yeah. I remember when they were starting in Dumbo, and they were like, you should go. And I was like, I don't know. And that was worldwide. So I'm really flattered that they knocked me over the head, and I couldn't be more happy to support them. I also wanna give another special shout out to one of my brand partners, Echorist, which is a rare wearable watch brand. That's David and Marguerite Gandhi, who are annual exhibitors there. Every time I go hang out, I'm very fortunate to try to be there at the booth and and help them out. So it's really a 2 for 1. Tiff [00:14:45]: There's a nice picture on your Instagram of you and, and Reginald Ferguson [00:14:48]: and Gandy. Tiff [00:14:48]: Yeah. Reginald Ferguson [00:14:49]: Yeah. Yeah. Tiff [00:14:49]: Just just chilling out. Reginald Ferguson [00:14:51]: Just chilling out. Tiff [00:14:52]: Wearing your fashion. The layered look of Afro punk fashion. Reginald Ferguson [00:14:57]: Yes. Let let's be clear. I'm grown. I can't hang with these kids. I know that. I know that. I have come to Afro punk in a shirt and a tie. and was berated by my friends. I don't care. I was working. But I but this weekend, that weekend is Saturday Sunday, essentially, it always represents the end of summer, you know, which as an adult, I'm like, oh, that's a drag. You know? Tiff [00:15:25]: I think it's it's yeah. Children and adults alike. Reginald Ferguson [00:15:29]: Well, yeah, but it's so different because when you're a kid, summer lasts forever. And when you're an adult, you look and go, what happened this summer? Tiff [00:15:37]: You're right. It does fly by. Reginald Ferguson [00:15:39]: I love watching. the culture and the vibe, particularly from a sartorial sartorial standpoint, these young kids is having a lock. And if you check out my Insta New York Fashion Geek, you'll see what I put up there. I started just taking photos of these kids because I was like, I just like I just like the diversity. You know, it we're not a monolith. as a people, but we are people literally of color and of pattern and of style and taking something out of nothing which isn't unique to the African American experience. It truly isn't, but it's a highlight of ours. And it's great to see these young kids just doing anything they want to do and making it fly. So Sunday, Saturday, here was my kit. Saturday, kept it simple. Had a pock shirt from London. No one has that pock graphic, like I do. Just saying. Tiff [00:16:41]: How you know that? Reginald Ferguson [00:16:42]: Because I look at pock shirts. Tiff [00:16:44]: Okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:16:45]: And no one has a pock shirt like mine. Tiff [00:16:47]: Alright. Reginald Ferguson [00:16:48]: So mine is clear, sharp, doesn't have crazy writing on it. It's a classic photo. It's doleful eyes. Boom. So I had that some dungarees and some sneakers. Kepler real because he is Afro punk, as I put in my post. How could he not be? How could he not embody that, that spirit, that culture? But to Tiffany's point, the second day I went in. Tiff [00:17:14]: Man, did you go in? Reginald Ferguson [00:17:16]: I was like, I know I'm twice their age. Tiff [00:17:19]: And I loved I love that I loved it. Reginald Ferguson [00:17:22]: -- try because I'm a New York fashion geek. So here was the kit y'all, rocking my echo wrist watch. Again, another shout out. So it's leather and wood. It's beautiful. Tiff [00:17:39]: Very unique too. Super unique. Yeah. Reginald Ferguson [00:17:40]: Their their brand is really great. Again, I I wanna constantly, you know, hype hype a brand that I believe in. So I'm not a brand ambassador for them, but I do believe in the brand. So had that on as an accessory My top was a green and brown boutique t shirt with a long tail. And then Tiffany's point to the lair, that's right. I had on some Levi camos, but underneath I had some new balance camo tights. Tiff [00:18:18]: And then you had the Levi's rolled all the way up. I had it rolled up. To the knee. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:23]: That's right. people could see my exposed calf. Tiff [00:18:28]: You exposed camo calf? Reginald Ferguson [00:18:29]: Yes. Exactly. And then, and then I rocked my, black slip on, sneaky's. Tiff [00:18:37]: It was a -- Banana Republic. Very nice. Very nice. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:40]: I saw as I came in, I saw one one young dude just give me a nod. I was on the cloud. I was like, I don't know. Tiff [00:18:47]: got affirmation. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:48]: I was like, why I don't know why he did that. Tiff [00:18:50]: because I look good. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:51]: No. But come on, man. Me me coming up there and that kid was like bringing a knife to a gunfight. we got, you know, we got gender fluidity. I mean, we just have everything there, and it's so beautiful, and it's so amazing. I just loved it. It was great music, of course. You know, it's a it's a culture. It's a culture. And I'm glad that I could just come in there and briefly do my thing. Tiff [00:19:17]: Good for you. Reginald Ferguson [00:19:18]: That's all I did. Thank you. Thank thank y'all thank y'all. So As you're hearing this, we are prepping for our podcast party. Tiff [00:19:27]: Yeah. I'm sure you Reginald Ferguson [00:19:28]: are. Pate. Tiff [00:19:30]: A little launch. A little large gathering. Reginald Ferguson [00:19:32]: Yes. Which was your idea. Tiff [00:19:33]: Elegant sort of atmosphere of the Reginald Ferguson [00:19:35]: -- Oh, absolutely. -- bar -- Yes. -- Tiff [00:19:37]: the Mansfield Hotel. Reginald Ferguson [00:19:40]: Yes. Tiff, break it down. I mean, you're the social You're the social creator here. Tiff [00:19:45]: I just, I mean, I thought that we needed to, you know, we need to blow it up with a path. So, like you said, you you started this this, this, business style and consultation business a year ago. it is the beginning of fashion week again a year later, and we need to take take we need to level up. We need to you need to level up. And what better way to do it, besides the podcast, but also the, you know, okay. Let's celebrate the podcast, even more, by bringing a bunch of people together who listen to us, who who watch your insta every day. and, sort of celebrate with, a cocktail or 2 in talking to us about fashion and more fashion and you know, the things that, you know, interests everyone. Fashion. Reginald Ferguson [00:20:31]: Absolutely. Absolutely. but again, a big shout out to you. We're really looking forward to it. Yeah. Tiff [00:20:36]: It's gonna be fun. Reginald Ferguson [00:20:37]: Happy to have people there. Tiff [00:20:38]: I like throwing parties. That's what I do. Reginald Ferguson [00:20:40]: That's cool. I like being at parties, Tiff [00:20:42]: so that's Reginald Ferguson [00:20:43]: that's helpful. Tiff [00:20:44]: So we have that coming up. That's, that's coming up on, September 6th, Thursday. Reginald Ferguson [00:20:49]: Yes. 5:30 on. 5:30 Tiff [00:20:51]: to 7:30 ish? Reginald Ferguson [00:20:52]: Yeah. Yeah. It's a Tiff [00:20:53]: little happy hour thing. Reginald Ferguson [00:20:54]: Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. Tiff [00:20:55]: Come come dress to impress. Reginald Ferguson [00:20:57]: Oh, no doubt. Right? No doubt. Tiff [00:20:59]: I know I am going to be. picked up my little number today. Oh, okay. Yeah. Reginald Ferguson [00:21:04]: Well, we all know now I have a rotation, so it'll be the Thursday suit. Tiff [00:21:08]: You won't be wearing the linen. Reginald Ferguson [00:21:09]: No. I will not be wearing the linen. Tiff [00:21:12]: I can't wait to see what you're wearing. Reginald Ferguson [00:21:13]: Oh, alright. Well, then I won't talk about it. Tiff [00:21:15]: I'm kinda anticipating it. I don't think I'm going to I think what I'm gonna wear is gonna be kind of complimentary to whatever you can pull out of your closet. I'm just gonna stepping up my game -- Okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:21:25]: -- Tiff [00:21:25]: a little bit, you know, because I am I am, you know, we're we're now working together. So Reginald Ferguson [00:21:31]: -- Yes. We're a team. Tiff [00:21:32]: I need to I need to represent, the the New York Fashion Geek brand just like you. Reginald Ferguson [00:21:36]: Absolutely. Tiff [00:21:37]: So, I think you I think you might be a little impressed. Reginald Ferguson [00:21:39]: No. No. I'm sure I will. I mean, yeah. Tiff [00:21:42]: So -- It's all good. Now that we've got all that done, Reginald Ferguson [00:21:44]: which is Tiff [00:21:45]: what we've been doing and all the things in our lives. Gotcha. Let's, let's talk let's get to the meat. The the meats. We, you know, we we talked the last podcast about fashion heroes. And notice it's heroes plural. So, you know, Prince was one of them, but now we've got, it's time to move on to the next the next one of our fashion heroes. Fashion fashion. Reginald Ferguson [00:22:16]: Who are you Tiff [00:22:17]: gonna have in mind that we should talk about today? Reginald Ferguson [00:22:19]: Our fashion hero today is run run ddmmcc55 for you, for you fresh fresh fresh. Everyone knows what that intro was for. Again, you can't get into licensing issues. Awesome. Tiff [00:22:40]: Well done. Reginald Ferguson [00:22:40]: Thank you. I love them. for so many reasons. Obviously, there were they were and are one of my musical heroes, but like Prince, but in a in a totally different way, you can't speak about them without speaking about fashion. Tiff [00:22:55]: They absolutely really made a huge, huge difference in the in the fashion world from the get go. Reginald Ferguson [00:23:03]: Understatement. So let's go back in time when I was when I was doing the stint and go and going to school in the Bronx, and my late grandparents lived in the Bronx. So what a lot of people don't understand from a musical standpoint in terms of rap is that when run DMC came in, they were the new school. The irony now is that error is considered the old school. It's actually incorrect. the old school was Flash. And that error was leather, feathers, I mean, it was dope. It was cool, you know, soul sonic force too. Just just that era. That's the that's the original old school. run DMC comes in not just musically, but fashionably raw, stripped down. the outfit matched the music, and they came in and they had fedoras, which I loved. My late grandfather rocked a fedora every day, I bought a fedora because of my grandpa. I still have I still have that fedora. It's a Stetson fedora because that's what my grandpa rock. So I rock 1 too. I rocked 1 in high school with a down jacket. So the fedora the jeans with the leather blazer, the track suit, I love the Sopranos. One of my favorite shows ever, Sopranos, David Chase, must give props to run DMC. because that whole Italian thing with the wise guys with the track suits, that's run DMC. I'm sorry. Tiff [00:24:54]: And it's still happening to this very day. Reginald Ferguson [00:24:56]: That's run DMC. Track suits at run DMC. I had a Nike track suit which I think I might have just rediscovered because I'm in a a family situation right now. And, They wear the track suit. I'm saying everything else, but the most obvious thing the obvious thing will be discussed. Well, the obvious thing is Adidas. Tiff [00:25:19]: Adidas. Exactly. Reginald Ferguson [00:25:20]: But I just felt that was the obvious. So let's lee let's leave that to last. Let us not forget the Doki rope, which again was emblematic of that time. I had the tiniest tiniest rope. I totally did. I found that photo too doing doing some family stuff. Tiff [00:25:39]: Oh, I wanna see that. Reginald Ferguson [00:25:40]: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I you know, when the time constant Tiff [00:25:44]: on Instagram. Reginald Ferguson [00:25:44]: I will. I mean, this this is a very this is a very long project about what I have to do. Tiff [00:25:49]: Right. Reginald Ferguson [00:25:50]: but when the time comes, I will scan a few of them. if anyone has seen on my Insta, again, if you check out New York FashionGeek on Insta, you will see a dedication And that is that is a throwback photo. and it's not of me. but it's it's very appropriate. And also if you look at the website, you know, there's there's a shout out. and that's to my mom. And, my mom, you know, I wouldn't be as fly as I am now if it wasn't for my mom. So begin back to DMC. So let's talk about Adidas. I was a Nike kid. Tiff [00:26:29]: I was reebok. Reginald Ferguson [00:26:30]: Full disclosure, but the Adidas thing, of course, was all around me. shell has, as we affect your call now. It's so crazy to see them again. In the words of my late mom, what's old is what's new again. Tiff [00:26:43]: Yep. Everything everything comes back into that. Absolutely. Every thing. Reginald Ferguson [00:26:47]: My best friend, Daryl Walker, I know where you are, Dee. I still love you. Still my best friend. Went to the famous run DMC concert at the garden, which I was forbidden to go to, did not go to. Tiff [00:27:00]: Really? Reginald Ferguson [00:27:01]: Yep. Because it was dangerous. Oh. And, my preppy behind woulda got eaten up. Oh, okay. Absolutely. But my boy d, he was a big dude, And he even told me how he saw people going back in time y'all with this expression, getting bit row by row. This is the famous concert where Adidas is about to do a deal with run DMC. because, of course, in the Raisin Hell album, My Adidas, great classic song, awesome flavor. Again, I'm totally biased because they're one of my favorite groups of all time. my cousin Ernie knows that give a big, big shout to Ernie Rogers. And he called me the day with, you know, with with with JM, master Jay, because he knew I'd be crushed. But, anyway, my boy is at this concert So they're like, oh, we'll work at the deal. Let's see. You know, they're coming straight from Germany. Oh, it's run the MC. They're supposed to be so special. Who is Well, Ron goes, whose house? And the garden says runs house? and he makes them all lift up their shell heads. The whole crowd has shell heads. Tiff [00:28:22]: Wow. Reginald Ferguson [00:28:23]: The deal is summarily done. A little New York fashion geek. Tiff [00:28:28]: I just got chills. Reginald Ferguson [00:28:29]: A little New York fashion geek Gits, which I still have somewhere in a capsule collection, the amazing leather sweatshirt, of run DMC. I still have it. Tiff [00:28:44]: A leather sweatshirt. Reginald Ferguson [00:28:46]: Cotten leather. That's right. Tiff [00:28:50]: It makes me hot. Thank you, man. Reginald Ferguson [00:28:51]: -- tougher than leather. It was yeah. I had to. Man, I I saved up for that. I rock that. Let's also just talk about their typography, please. That logo And I don't know if Bill Adler created that logo, but that logo is so significant to this day. that people change up the words, the letters, to fit the typography. I can't even think of the other iterations off the top of my head, but I remember going down because I grew up in the West Village, so I also did it in the Bronx, and now I live in Brooklyn. Going down I mean, I was, I mean, not even going down. I mean, I was at NYU the time. So I was there. I was in my hood. I was in Greenwich Village, but going to a place that's no longer just famous t shirt shop on Eighth Street. and getting the run d m c tougher than lever 4, and which in the back had a rhyme. And I rock that all the time. Tiff [00:29:57]: What was the rhyme? Reginald Ferguson [00:29:58]: I you know what? I saw it recently. I don't wanna botch it because I don't want my car taken. but I also had a run the MC poster on my wall. Tiff [00:30:08]: Oh, I am. I think that was a standard for all, all fans. Reginald Ferguson [00:30:14]: Their ability to cross over also should not be ignored or diminished. Mhmm. Because they started influencing, not just musically, but, again, through fashion, people rocking lee's, people rocking shell heads, people rocking all all the accessories I talked about, That's all you saw. You saw elements of that. Let us talk about the leather goose down. which my same friend Daryl Walker had, which I did not. That was not gonna happen. Tiff [00:30:49]: Why not? Reginald Ferguson [00:30:51]: My grandparents was not a cosigner. However, don't get it twisted. I had a clout. And if everyone knows what that is from back in the day, The clout was the big heavy elephant style leather with the raccoon collar with the belt. I still have that in the archive. Tiff [00:31:07]: I don't remember that. No. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:08]: Well, you're probably in NC by that time. Right. Tiff [00:31:11]: Well, I was still in -- Yeah. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:12]: You were still in NC. -- Tiff [00:31:13]: still there. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:13]: But the leather goosene Tiff [00:31:16]: That just leather goose down to me sounds contradictory. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:20]: Oh, no. It's beautiful. I need Tiff [00:31:21]: to see a picture that, Reginald Ferguson [00:31:22]: for sure. You do need to see a picture. It it was incredible, and they did all of that. Tiff [00:31:28]: Well, they are in the rock and roll hall of fun fame too. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:31]: Absolutely. But that is for music, but you can't have one. -- Tiff [00:31:34]: a huge crossover to to your point. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:36]: You can't have one without the other. Their style impact is so significant. I mean, essentially, you must view them as the creator of street style. Tiff [00:31:50]: Absolutely. I was gonna say that earlier, but I wanted you Reginald Ferguson [00:31:53]: to say -- Not even necessarily the creators, but just really the impactors, because obviously prior to them, you know, just whole the whole thing with hip hop with b boys and b girls, me being a part of that, you know, I I was drawing a blank on on this thing with Lee patches. I forgot what that was called when people would rip off your Lee patch. but all of that, the La Tigray, you know, the kit was the La Tigray with the lees with the shell heads. with a gold chain, with Cassells, or Sergio volented Cassells. You know who I'm talking about because I had the sergio's too, because there was no way I'd have Cassells. because that had been killed on the street. So all of that all of that, they embodied and put out in a broad market. we had it as a niche in the 5 boroughs. Each borough representing themselves through break dancing, through beat boxing, you know, the all all the elements of hip hop. And they took it. Now I'm gonna really be honest, Once they did the deal, outside of the top that I got, I didn't like any of the sneakers And, again, I was a Nike guy. Yeah. because you were either Nike or Adidas, really. Obviously, like -- Or rebock? -- or rebock. No. You had rebock or Deodora. You know, you had a brands. I'm gonna be clear, but I was I was a Nike kid, but they're, like, they're sneakers post shell heads. I was like, But that sweatshirt, that sweatshirt was hot. It was fire. Tiff [00:33:27]: I wasn't one to follow. Like, everybody had to have it, so I gotta have it. as I've mentioned before in a prior cop podcast. So I probably I do remember seeing these these shoes going, I don't get I don't get it. Reginald Ferguson [00:33:40]: And it -- Oh, they were flat. -- was that laces? Tiff [00:33:42]: It was a cultural thing. Absolutely. You know, it wasn't just a fashionable thing. It was It was a taking over of a culture and the movement created from that culture in an in the fashion world. It's that that crossover. music to fashion, for sure. Absolutely. And, and it was astounding. It was it was Lee Jeans and Adidas to sort of moderately priced labels. Reginald Ferguson [00:34:09]: Right. Lee Busters. That was the gang. Lee Buster, people ripping off your patch. Lee Busters. Tiff [00:34:14]: So that was pretty amazing. It was, it was sort of I can't think of the word, you know, when you create it's the creating a cult following. It was very cultish. Reginald Ferguson [00:34:26]: Calvin Klein, no friend of mine, don't want nobody's name on my behind. My mom lost her mind when she heard that lyric. She loved that because, essentially, Rap was rebel music at that time. And, essentially, what they were saying, obviously pro prior to the Adidas deal is that we cannot be bought. This is who we are. Take us as we are. And they came in with a force. They were a cultural force. And that was so significant. Oh, man, may I not forget I'd be remiss. DMC with what I call the kiladillo gloves. you know, with the exposed on the backside and the knuckles. I always call those killer dealers because growing up, like, you'd always see, like, the guy, the hired gun he'd have those gloves on. So it's called those Killerillos. I mean, they just they ripped open the frame. and we loved it. We loved it because we we took something that was a subset, and then they got blown up. And, of course, you can't blow up unless unless the greater market takes it. you know, meaning peep people who don't look like me. So it was it was amazing. It was amazing, and their impact will never be forgotten. Tiff [00:35:46]: For sure. Well, that was amazing. Reginald Ferguson [00:35:50]: Yep. Tiff [00:35:50]: That was your your knowledge. Oh, who? Love, your passion. Amazing. Reginald Ferguson [00:35:56]: I try. I don't know about that, but -- Tiff [00:35:57]: And I hope they I hope they listen, and I hope they hear it. Reginald Ferguson [00:36:00]: I would I would love that. still one of my favorite groups all the time. Tiff [00:36:03]: So, on our next segment, the I must have it. Reginald Ferguson [00:36:12]: I must have it. Habit. Habit. Section. Tiff [00:36:17]: I must have it. Yes? It's gotta be. Is it is it in a a run DMC fashion item? Reginald Ferguson [00:36:24]: It's so funny as you were talking, I was like, oh, I should have I should have said the I should have said the leather goose. Tiff [00:36:31]: No. Okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:36:32]: Oh my god. My boy had that. That that joint was fly, man. Tiff [00:36:37]: Alright. So what we what are we gonna talk about then if it's not gonna be the leather goose? Reginald Ferguson [00:36:42]: It's gonna be something totally different across the Atlantic. Tiff [00:36:46]: Okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:36:48]: The I must have it. Item of the day is guess what? Tiff [00:36:51]: I give up. Reginald Ferguson [00:36:52]: The Burberry trench. Tiff [00:36:55]: That's a good one. Reginald Ferguson [00:36:56]: Thank you. Tiff [00:36:56]: That's a very, very good one. So what, you know, for the listeners out there who may not know what this is, what is it? Tell him tell him what it is. Reginald Ferguson [00:37:05]: Well, Burberry is a is a classic brand. you know, initially a outerwear brand. Of course, they're doing so much more. And big shout out for having, the brother at Off White now be their creative director. I mean, that's an amazing stride, you know, for people who look like me. I think that's so impressive. The great thing about the trench, which you can speak to, I think, probably better than Nide TIFF is The things that we learn about fashion is that often there are items that were used merely for functionality. Tiff [00:37:43]: Yes. Reginald Ferguson [00:37:44]: and then become quotidian. And that's what the trench coat. That's what the trench coat was. Yeah. trench warfare? Tiff [00:37:52]: Yep. Reginald Ferguson [00:37:53]: This is this is about the military. Tiff [00:37:56]: And that's exactly where it was derived from, actually. It was designed. I have it right here in 1912 by Thomas Burberry to keep the officers protected against the wind and the rain. So he what he did was, prior to 1912, in in the day here, Reginald Ferguson [00:38:16]: 18 79, Tiff [00:38:18]: He invented this fabric. It's called Gabberdeen. and what it is, it's a really, really tight weave. Most of the time, back in the day, it was worst at wool, but in in the years since it's it's it goes from a cotton blend polyester blend. You could probably still get worse than wool Gafferdeen. but, that tight weave would protect against the elements. It would keep the, excuse me, the wind out, the rain, and and it and it worked really well in the trenches. functionally. And then as, you know, the wars pass, the the, you know, it just was a great design for the everyday man. in in the in the modern day times. So, that's it's also the tan color with, the lining. The the top. Yeah. The, the camp that was a camel, ivory, red, and black. Reginald Ferguson [00:39:09]: Oh, the tartan. Yeah. The tartan. Tiff [00:39:10]: On the inside, Now that didn't come around until the 19 twenties. Oh, okay. So that was that was probably the fashionable, edition once, you know, it moved from just being functional to being absolutely I must have item for the fashion set that, that liner was, was put in. Reginald Ferguson [00:39:29]: It's amazing now. You know, you fast forward and how that that tartan, that plant is just it's You don't think a Burberry without that. Tiff [00:39:38]: No. You see that, and you know exactly what brand it is. Reginald Ferguson [00:39:41]: Exactly. I mean, down to down to their packaging for Cologne. Tiff [00:39:44]: Right. Reginald Ferguson [00:39:45]: So -- Tiff [00:39:45]: Which I have. Reginald Ferguson [00:39:46]: Oh, okay. Tiff [00:39:47]: And I wear it. Reginald Ferguson [00:39:48]: Okay. It's too woodsy for me. I'm a sit I'm a citrus guy. Tiff [00:39:51]: Now one thing about this coat that I think that is important is the design, you know, the, the epilts. So the epilts, you see them. And in this modern day, you go, what do you do with that? back of the day, that's where the military would would put their brass to show their rank. And, and in you know, there's not they're not really functional. No. Reginald Ferguson [00:40:14]: I mean, now that, yeah, they're decorative. Tiff [00:40:16]: But their signature. I mean, you can't have a Burborigo without the epilots. Reginald Ferguson [00:40:20]: Right. However, I must have it. And I do have it because I do have 1, and mine does not have epulets. Tiff [00:40:27]: You don't have epulets? Reginald Ferguson [00:40:28]: No. I don't. Oh. Mine does not have it. You can have a Burberry trench going, and I have everywhere. -- can. And I wanna keep it real. I'm a London Fog kid because my grandpa had London Fog. So I had London Fog, and I probably had other brands too with Epulitz. But back in the day, meaning, like, I don't know, around 10 years little less than 10 years ago. My trench was dying. And I was like, oh, let me look around, look around, and a friend of mine, big shout out to Tracy McGraw at BT. She was like, you gotta get a burberry. I was like, no. No. I'm not doing that. Where's the London Fog section? And, no, I have not regretted that purchase. It's an investment I will have it probably for the rest of my life. Tiff [00:41:18]: Well, you you can it lasts forever. One thing I I read that I was very astounded by over 100 highly skilled processes need to be completed to create a Burberry trench coat. Reginald Ferguson [00:41:32]: 100 Tiff [00:41:33]: highly skilled processes. Each trench coat takes approximately 3 weeks to make. Each trench coat. That's one coat. 3 weeks. Come on. That's a that's an investment, for sure. Reginald Ferguson [00:41:44]: So -- I'm glad I got it. Tiff [00:41:46]: I love that you pick this. I must have an item because I I get it. Thank you. I get it. Totally. Reginald Ferguson [00:41:52]: Cool. Tiff [00:41:53]: So, boom. You gotta get it now. Alright. Reginald Ferguson [00:41:58]: Let's move on. Tiff [00:41:59]: Alright. We're moving off. Reginald Ferguson [00:42:01]: Fashion world of the today. Fashion fashion word of the day. Fashion word, word of the day. Tiff [00:42:15]: Right. It is a word in the world. Reginald Ferguson [00:42:17]: Yes. It is. Tiff [00:42:18]: So, what we do in this segment is each one of us brings a a fashion word to, to kind of try and stump the other, perhaps, or, you know, just, you know, add to the add to the podcast fun. so red, you wanna go first, or you want me to go first with my word? Reginald Ferguson [00:42:37]: I'll go first. Tiff [00:42:38]: Okay. So what is your word? Reginald Ferguson [00:42:41]: My word is balaclava. Tiff [00:42:45]: Balla Klava. Reginald Ferguson [00:42:46]: Yeah. Balo Klava. Tiff [00:42:48]: I have no idea what that word is. Reginald Ferguson [00:42:55]: I love that word. Tiff [00:42:56]: I can't even spell it. Reginald Ferguson [00:42:57]: Well, I well. Tiff [00:42:58]: v a l a c l a v a? Reginald Ferguson [00:43:00]: Yes. Tiff [00:43:01]: Did I spell that right? Yes. I spelled Reginald Ferguson [00:43:03]: Yeah. See? See? And you're the one who wanted the spelling thing in this. I don't want spelling. Tiff [00:43:08]: Wow. Reginald Ferguson [00:43:08]: Like, those days are gone. I mean, my Ctax is great. Wow. I love that word. I love the way it rolls off the tongue. It is a knitted hat that only shows part of the face, like the eyes. It started in the military. Was a surprise. Battle of Bala Club in the 1800. When I first saw it, I saw it in the sports illustrated with Nicky Lauda, F One. Tiff [00:43:28]: So it comes down over your face? Reginald Ferguson [00:43:30]: That's right. Tiff [00:43:32]: and the got the eyes are out. Reginald Ferguson [00:43:34]: Yeah. So Tiff [00:43:34]: you look like an, like, a 1920s 1930s bandit in the cartoons? where they have the hat coming down to here and the eyes are cut out? Reginald Ferguson [00:43:42]: I guess. Tiff [00:43:43]: Wow. I have never in my life heard Bala Klava. Reginald Ferguson [00:43:47]: Oh, yeah. Freaking love that. Tiff [00:43:48]: Love it. You must have really dug deep for that one. Reginald Ferguson [00:43:51]: Dang it. Do you ever lose weight of my vocab? Tiff [00:43:55]: That one's a good run. good one, Reg. I'm a give that to you. Alright. You're ready for mine? Reginald Ferguson [00:43:59]: Yeah. Let's do it. Tiff [00:44:00]: Alright. So, my word, is a word that can have several meanings. Oh. Very simple word. You should be able to spell it. No problem. Reginald Ferguson [00:44:08]: Spelling things. Tiff [00:44:10]: You have to spell Alright. You know, it's important for the, you know, if the listeners wanna look it up, they gotta know how to spell it so they can Google it. So my word is NAP. NAP. And I'm not talking about the sleeping kid. Reginald Ferguson [00:44:24]: I know. So you mean nape? Tiff [00:44:27]: That's nape. Reginald Ferguson [00:44:28]: Oh, you want nap, n a p? Tiff [00:44:29]: Yep. NAP. Reginald Ferguson [00:44:30]: I don't know it in the fashion. I mean, I kinda like the draw of the fabric. Tiff [00:44:35]: Oh, Reg. So close. Keep going. Come on. Reginald Ferguson [00:44:39]: that's really all I have, and we run out of time. So it was just I lost I'm Tiff [00:44:44]: gonna give you this one. I think you were you're absolutely right. It does have everything to do with the texture of the fabric. It's the raised surfaces found, projecting from a fabric, and it's produced either intentionally when you're you're you're, you're weaving it or when you're brushing it. you can now, you know, I'm talking about the fabrics, like, like flannel has a nap. So does, They the article I read, and thank you, fashion beans. Saxony wool. I have to look up Saxony wool, but I'm it's it's a long along fiber wool, but also velvet. You know? Velvet also has a nap. Sure. So it's any fabric that if you draw your hand across it, It might change color. Reginald Ferguson [00:45:27]: A characteristic. Tiff [00:45:27]: It changed a little characteristic. That's called the nap. Reginald Ferguson [00:45:30]: Wow. Tiff [00:45:30]: Kinda like suede. suede has a nap. Reginald Ferguson [00:45:32]: Yeah. I'm sure. Tiff [00:45:33]: So that is my word. NAP. Reginald Ferguson [00:45:36]: That was dope too if you got me. Tiff [00:45:38]: And speaking of nap. Is it nap time? Reginald Ferguson [00:45:40]: Nope. But that's a wrap. Thank you so much for listening. We hope you have fun down for another one. Please tell your friends about us.
