Reginald Ferguson [00:12:08]: It it is cool because he's cool. Tiff [00:12:10]: because he's cool. Reginald Ferguson [00:12:11]: I'm willfully biased here, ladies and gentlemen. Reginald Ferguson [00:12:37]: That's it. Since I was little, I had a clean muslin cut. Get it as your best barbershop on a 116 4th Atlantic. Barber Shop's still there. Wow. My mom would take me there. Tiff [00:12:50]: How old are you now? Reginald Ferguson [00:12:51]: I'm grown. Tiff [00:12:54]: It's a long time. Reginald Ferguson [00:12:55]: Yes. Time has gone by. It waits for no one. My mom would take me there. One day, she let me go by myself. I told Brother James, who's also known as Brother San, to give me a shape up. He said, brother, little brother. Are you sure? I told him I was because I was trying to grow a little fro. He did the deed. I went home. My mom slapped me on the head. Sent me back to get my real haircut. Paid with my own money. Tiff [00:13:29]: Dang. Twice? Reginald Ferguson [00:13:31]: yes. Oh, wow. So what I'm saying is not a lot of options for boys who look like me. Tiff [00:13:37]: Okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:13:38]: Down to the bricks, fro. Tiff [00:13:40]: Got it. Reginald Ferguson [00:13:41]: But then the late eighties were around. Tiff [00:13:43]: Yep. I got somebody in mine right now. Reginald Ferguson [00:13:46]: One summer. I'm staying in the Bronx with my late grandparents up in the Bronx where the people are fresh. And I see this kid, Alaric, and I think 1 or 2 of his cousins. They look like space aliens. They had these tall head cuts that are square with no hair on the sides. I never saw anything like that before. I was freaked out. Tiff [00:14:13]: It's definitely different. I didn't Reginald Ferguson [00:14:15]: know what to do. Then I'm hearing stories about a cut called the Jersey. the Philly. I'm from New York. So I was like, what what is all this? Then big daddy Cain comes out. on radio and wax at first. I loved his rap style, the music, everything. Then I see the 8, no half stepping video is over. Tiff [00:14:41]: You're done. Reginald Ferguson [00:14:41]: Oh, yeah. I already love the song. but the video was amazing. Tiff [00:14:44]: What was it? It Reginald Ferguson [00:14:45]: still it still holds up. Tiff [00:14:46]: What was the video? Why? What did Reginald Ferguson [00:14:47]: you say? Tiff [00:14:49]: The flat top. Reginald Ferguson [00:14:50]: He had a flat top. He was quickly becoming my hero, so do his dances. School love a scrap love, a big shout out. So is his DJ? Tiff [00:14:58]: Hey, the one this is my that the answer Reginald Ferguson [00:15:00]: -- Who, what? Tiff [00:15:01]: The girls at the mic and the, and the step in Reginald Ferguson [00:15:03]: -- No. No. No. No. No. He's dances. His dances. school level scrap loving. some of the best dances in all of in all of rap. I'm hooked. Tiff [00:15:14]: The flat top. Reginald Ferguson [00:15:15]: I'm hooked. Tiff [00:15:15]: Did it Reginald Ferguson [00:15:16]: I'm hooked. Tiff [00:15:17]: You're done. Reginald Ferguson [00:15:18]: I'm hooked. Tiff [00:15:19]: What'd you do? What'd you do? Did Reginald Ferguson [00:15:20]: you go? No. I decided. Tiff [00:15:22]: Did you go? Reginald Ferguson [00:15:22]: no. I decide. Well, you don't just go. You you have to prepare for it. Oh. So I decided I'm getting a flat top. That's literally the first step. Tiff [00:15:32]: Okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:15:33]: So the first The next step was I started it had to be gradual for my family. Tiff [00:15:43]: Mom, you wanna give mom a heart attack? Reginald Ferguson [00:15:45]: Mom, grandparents, everybody. So I started fading my hair. I started growing out the top. I left my barber of decades. Tiff [00:15:56]: No. You didn't. Reginald Ferguson [00:15:57]: I had to. Tiff [00:15:58]: He wouldn't do it? Reginald Ferguson [00:15:59]: He would not do it. Aw. And I knew I didn't wanna have back and forth. I didn't want him talking my uncle and talking to my grandpa who would drive me to the barbershop. I just I couldn't do that. -- Tiff [00:16:11]: a rebel moment. That was your rebel moment. Reginald Ferguson [00:16:13]: You you know what? You're correct. You're absolutely correct. Tiff [00:16:15]: which I didn't think you had, but you had a robot. Reginald Ferguson [00:16:18]: Absolutely. Absolutely. And I found another barber. big shout out to George Steinberg if you're listening. I love you, and you know that. And I miss you terribly. he's my mentor, not just my barber. He was a mentor to me. Tiff [00:16:29]: Wow. Reginald Ferguson [00:16:30]: Rav was rebel music, Tiff. So for you to say that, it's absolutely accurate. I was rebelling. Tiff [00:16:35]: There you were. Reginald Ferguson [00:16:36]: My family was shocked. Tiff [00:16:38]: I bet. Reginald Ferguson [00:16:39]: But my grandma said something that I hold on to to this very day And if you become a client of mine, you should hold on to it too. My grandma said to everybody, petitive my grandpa. He has to wear it. Tiff [00:16:58]: Oh, woah. That's true. That's very true. Reginald Ferguson [00:17:02]: When I think about that phrase, It says a lot about my grandma. Tiff [00:17:06]: Yeah. It does. Reginald Ferguson [00:17:07]: it's an expression of tolerance of acceptance. And I think, unfortunately, in this current climate, that seems to be missing. Yeah. I've always tried to have that embodiment Thanks to my grandma. Tiff [00:17:22]: And she she letting you figure it out for yourself. Reginald Ferguson [00:17:25]: Yeah. Tiff [00:17:26]: Because you're you're growing Right. You're becoming a Reginald Ferguson [00:17:29]: man. Right. Tiff [00:17:29]: Like, you figure it out for yourself. Reginald Ferguson [00:17:31]: And that went that went down to all -- -- told? No. And that went down to all outfits. I mean, I remember I remember the decisive day that my grandma Tiff [00:17:40]: stopped buying me clothes because Reginald Ferguson [00:17:40]: I turned down her gift of a fake members only quilted jacket. Tiff [00:17:48]: It was fake? Reginald Ferguson [00:17:49]: Yes. Oh, no. It was, like, grandma, what is this? man. I remember she looked Tiff [00:17:53]: at me. Reginald Ferguson [00:17:53]: -- Tiff [00:17:53]: showed up with a fake in my school. You really got it hard. Reginald Ferguson [00:17:56]: Well, first of all, I just didn't like I didn't like that quilt style, the squares. I think that wasn't me. And I remember she looked at me and she said, oh, don't worry. This will never happen again. Tiff [00:18:07]: What? Go grandma. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:08]: Yeah. No. nice. She didn't she didn't mess around. Tiff [00:18:11]: She recognized. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:12]: And, her moratorium on buying me stuff began. That was on my own. Tiff [00:18:16]: Well, That's a good thing. No. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:18]: I know. I know. It's Tiff [00:18:19]: a good thing. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:19]: I know. Absolutely. Absolutely. Tiff [00:18:21]: It's how you became your flash off. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:23]: Well, I if you look at the website, And even if you look at one of my posts recently on NYFG, I come by this through family. I come by this genetically. Right. So it's not me. I was raised by a mom who stressed fashion. I was raised by grandparents with stressed fashion. Tiff [00:18:44]: Yeah. Yeah. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:45]: So I I'm the byproduct of that. There's nothing original here. Tiff [00:18:47]: Eat and live it. Reginald Ferguson [00:18:48]: Yeah. There's nothing original here. Alright. So I rock that flat top, which eventually became a high top, the kid in play. Tiff [00:18:56]: Yeah. I've I wanted I didn't wanna say it earlier because I didn't wanna ruin your reveal, but Absolutely. That's who I'm totally familiar Reginald Ferguson [00:19:02]: with. Absolutely. I rock that thing to the end. Tiff [00:19:05]: Because, I mean, it was in it was absolutely out there. It was -- Right. -- you take it. You've got your flat tire. They took it further. I was Reginald Ferguson [00:19:13]: one of the space aliens. Tiff [00:19:14]: They took it further than anything. And I think is that why? this is a fashion thing because it was it's something that was taken to the extreme. It was unique. It was different. It was a a choice. Reginald Ferguson [00:19:27]: It was a fashion thing for people who looked like me and beyond if you have curly hair, because that's requirement. Tiff [00:19:35]: You Reginald Ferguson [00:19:35]: have to have dense curly hair. Tiff [00:19:36]: Yep. My hair would never do that. Reginald Ferguson [00:19:39]: Because we only have 2 options as Black men. So And let's go beyond. Let's go beyond. Tiff [00:19:47]: You can relax it. Reginald Ferguson [00:19:49]: That's not an option in my family. Tiff [00:19:51]: The Jerry Curl. Yeah. Reginald Ferguson [00:19:52]: No. That never happened to my family. And, certainly, I didn't. No. Heck, no. Tiff [00:19:57]: No? Reginald Ferguson [00:19:58]: No. No. No chemicals. Uh-uh. Only wild root. brothers. That's the only thing that went on the scalp. Tiff [00:20:04]: Looks good. Reginald Ferguson [00:20:05]: Thank you. And, yeah, it's funny now because now I rock a fro, and I think I rock a fro because everybody, particularly if they don't look like me goes. So did you have an Afro when you were little? Come on. Didn't you? No. I I didn't really. I I had brief stints, but I really had a Muslim haircut. I remember when I really transitioned, my grandma was like, I missed that haircut. So but to be honest, the high top was really the best cut from my shape head. I have a long narrow head. I'm gonna keep it real. Tiff [00:20:39]: you're gonna post that picture on Instagram. Right? Reginald Ferguson [00:20:41]: Eventually. Tiff [00:20:42]: don't make me wait. I gotta see it. I got it. Oh, I Reginald Ferguson [00:20:46]: have it, and it's gonna be live. One summer just to let you know, I had different patterns cut in my head. Tiff [00:20:51]: Oh, that's cool. I like that. Reginald Ferguson [00:20:53]: Oh, heck yeah. Tiff [00:20:53]: I like that. Reginald Ferguson [00:20:54]: Yeah. And, also, people have to understand when you talk about fashion, it was a cultural cut. I went to a African exhibit at that time, and I saw these masks of the only tribe, and they had flat tops with parts. and I couldn't believe it. I mean, I was connected to my ancestors. And also remember that time, afrocentricity was very big back then. I was already wearing suits came, and I wasn't cutting out my eyebrows, and I wasn't rocking trunk jewelry. But big daddy Cain helped me in my self expression, long lived the king. Tiff [00:21:28]: So that's why he's your fashion hero. Wow. Alright. So the flat top brings us to, somehow, to our next segment of the podcast, and that is. And I have no idea where this is gonna go, but The next segment is the I must have it fashion item. So Reginald Ferguson [00:22:00]: must have it. Habit. Habit. Habit. Tiff [00:22:06]: Brad. Reginald Ferguson [00:22:06]: Yes. Tiff [00:22:07]: so the I must fashion have it. I mean, by now, everybody knows it's it's what you think as a style consultant, fashion consultant, every man, the everyday man should have. Reginald Ferguson [00:22:17]: Something to covet. Tiff [00:22:19]: Something to covet. So the I must have it Fashion item of today is Reginald Ferguson [00:22:24]: A vintage Mercedes Benz. Tiff [00:22:28]: what? Reginald Ferguson [00:22:28]: Yes. I must have it. I don't have it. I want 1. Tiff [00:22:34]: Okay. well, my first question of many -- Yes. Reginald Ferguson [00:22:38]: -- Tiff [00:22:38]: is, How do you wear it? Reginald Ferguson [00:22:41]: A car is an extension of oneself, ladies and gentlemen. So if you're gonna be fly from head to toe, you need to be a ride that also is fly. Alright. What if I had a bespoke suit on which may happen soon. Shout out David Reeves, Reeves Reeves. Tiff [00:23:00]: We gotta talk about that. Reginald Ferguson [00:23:01]: And then I went into dare I say it? a Camry. Tiff [00:23:11]: I love I love my Camrys, but I absolutely get what you're talking about. It's not Reginald Ferguson [00:23:15]: a good look. Tiff [00:23:16]: I had a Camry. me. And I know I know what you're talking about. It's not Reginald Ferguson [00:23:19]: a good look. Tiff [00:23:19]: No. Not at all. Reginald Ferguson [00:23:20]: I'm not against Camrys. I'm just talking about -- The low. Everything's about coordination. Tiff [00:23:25]: So you you're taking fashion, not just from what you put on your body, but what you put your body into. Reginald Ferguson [00:23:31]: Absolutely. Tiff [00:23:33]: I would have never thought that fashion extended to that. Reginald Ferguson [00:23:38]: Julia does. Alright. 4 wheels. I am a licensed driver, which is rare in New York. Tiff [00:23:46]: That it is. Reginald Ferguson [00:23:47]: I'm like a unicorn. Tiff [00:23:49]: Well, rare from people who are born and raised New York. Reginald Ferguson [00:23:52]: That Tiff [00:23:53]: ends up being the other one. Reginald Ferguson [00:23:54]: -- Tiff [00:23:54]: transplants who have wheels. Reginald Ferguson [00:23:55]: No. Of course. No. No. I mean, if you're a native, there are more people who don't have licenses than do. But as I always tell people like any red blooded American boy, I wanted to learn how to drive. I can remember sitting there in my grandpa's car with the steering wheel locked. Tiff [00:24:11]: Did he have a Mercedes Benz? Reginald Ferguson [00:24:13]: No. He did not. He was an American car driving enthusiast. Tiff [00:24:19]: Alright. Reginald Ferguson [00:24:20]: No foreign cars. He was really emblematic of that time. Tiff [00:24:24]: nice. Reginald Ferguson [00:24:24]: Particularly the gas crisis and all that. No foreign cars. He wasn't xenophobic about it. He's just was like Tiff [00:24:31]: My father was I Reginald Ferguson [00:24:32]: lived America. Iran American cars. Because I wanna be clear to your to your query, my aunt bought foreign cars. So so that was a big deal. Tiff [00:24:45]: So you had both sides of it. Reginald Ferguson [00:24:46]: She was a Toyota. She was a Toyota gal. It shut out to my aunt. Tiff [00:24:49]: You can't kill a -- No. Reginald Ferguson [00:24:50]: -- Tiff [00:24:50]: a a Toyota car. Reginald Ferguson [00:24:51]: And also she had a Mitsubishi Galant. Yeah. Big big shout out, to my to my aunt. And then she has a Volkswagen now. So, Auntie, I guess now since I've shouted you out, you should listen to this. Tiff [00:25:03]: What's her what's her name again? Reginald Ferguson [00:25:04]: Auntie. Auntie. That's Montie. Oh, That's it. Tiff [00:25:08]: Okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:25:08]: Auntie. Tiff [00:25:09]: Auntie? Reginald Ferguson [00:25:10]: Yeah. I spoke to her on the phone last week trying to have some biz, but Auntie, now I guess I have to tell you I have a podcast. Tiff [00:25:17]: He didn't know? Reginald Ferguson [00:25:18]: No. We haven't talked about it. We've we've been no. No. And I and and and my defense would be dealing with a lot of family lately. So, we just talk about that biz, but -- Tiff [00:25:28]: A little bit at a time. Reginald Ferguson [00:25:29]: Yes. However, she did attend the New York Fashion Week opener last year. when the business launched. Wow. Yes. She did. And that was really great. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. That really meant a lot to me. I think it meant a lot to her Tiff [00:25:42]: as well. Reginald Ferguson [00:25:43]: I'm not trying to speak for you onto I know when you hear this, you're gonna edit me. Tiff [00:25:47]: So let's talk about Mercedes Benz again. Reginald Ferguson [00:25:49]: Okay. Yes. Tiff [00:25:50]: So we're wearing a a vintage Mercedes Benz. Do we have a specific years. Yeah. I'm Reginald Ferguson [00:25:54]: gonna give you a range. I'm broad. Well, we're not doing station wagons. That's for sure. Tiff [00:26:00]: I don't though, the hipsters, the hipster everyday make a probably rocket station. Reginald Ferguson [00:26:04]: I am not a hipster. Tiff [00:26:05]: Okay. Well, remember, you might have to be a fashion consultant to a hipster. Reginald Ferguson [00:26:10]: Oh, no. No. No. I don't have I am a fashion consultant to anyone seeking help. Tiff [00:26:15]: Any everyday man. Reginald Ferguson [00:26:16]: Absolutely. No. No. No. So I'm not I'm not against that that categorization. Right. I just don't like sational wagons. Tiff [00:26:22]: Okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:26:23]: Didn't grow with 1. Don't like them. They're okay. I mean, I actually I saw a modern mistake been Sage Wag recently. I was like, oh, it's cool. If you have to give up, then Tiff [00:26:33]: Right. Reginald Ferguson [00:26:33]: Okay. If you Tiff [00:26:35]: have to give up, Reginald Ferguson [00:26:37]: My range is from the seventies through the nineties. Tiff [00:26:42]: Oh, okay. Reginald Ferguson [00:26:43]: My mom loved Benz's So, therefore, I love Benz. Tiff [00:26:49]: And we're talking about a Sedan, or should we go convertible? Now let's move on to the fashion word of the day. Reginald Ferguson [00:30:00]: Fashion word. Yes. Tiff [00:30:07]: I love this segment, and I love this segment because it's fun. it's fun to try to this is where we bring we each bring a word for each of us. I bring you a word. You bring a word, and I try to stump you. Like, I try to pick a word. I don't think you've heard. Sometimes I like to make it easy, Reginald Ferguson [00:30:21]: and I and Tiff [00:30:22]: I think you try to stump me too. And, we bring the word. We, we ask I ask you to spell it and define it and use it in a sentence. Reginald Ferguson [00:30:30]: Right. Tiff [00:30:31]: If I don't stump you. Reginald Ferguson [00:30:32]: Correct. Tiff [00:30:33]: Alright. So who wants to go first? Reginald Ferguson [00:30:36]: You could go first. Tiff [00:30:37]: I'll get to go first again. Reginald Ferguson [00:30:39]: Sure. Ladies first. Tiff [00:30:40]: Alright. Well, I, let's see. I have a couple of words. Reginald Ferguson [00:30:44]: I don't understand this couple. It's the fashion word of the day. Tiff [00:30:48]: Well, because Reginald Ferguson [00:30:48]: -- -- words -- I like -- -- for the day. Tiff [00:30:50]: I like to come prepared so that based on our conversation, if I feel like it, I could pick a word that kinda sort of relates to what we've talking about. Reginald Ferguson [00:30:58]: Okay. Tiff [00:30:58]: So, I'm looking to see what we have, what I have here. And, unfortunately, I'm gonna have to go a little off topic. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:07]: Okay. I I'm just hoping you get the word up. Tiff [00:31:08]: Alright. The word is DAC strap. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:12]: Say what? Tiff [00:31:14]: DAC strap. It's 2 words, actually. It's a compound word. 2 words. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:18]: d a x, strap? Tiff [00:31:21]: So close. So close. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:23]: I have no I'm fishing here. I have no idea what you're talking about. Tiff [00:31:26]: I'm gonna spell it. It's d a k s strap. You got the strap right. a DAC's strap. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:32]: What is that? Tiff [00:31:34]: Slash side adjuster. So I bring this up because, one of the I got you. I said, one of the visits, one of your fittings with the Reginald Ferguson [00:31:46]: -- Were Reeves? Reeves as well? Yep. shout Tiff [00:31:48]: out. He was wearing, a pair of, slacks with a deck strap. So what it is is it's adjustable straps. on the side of trousers. Reginald Ferguson [00:31:57]: Oh, I don't call it that. Tiff [00:31:58]: Used to tighten or loosen the fit, predominantly found on trousers without belt loops. Reginald Ferguson [00:32:03]: Right. Of course. Right? I don't call it that. Tiff [00:32:06]: Yep. Well, that's the name. That's the official name. And I get these I get these fashion words from, fashionbeans.com. Reginald Ferguson [00:32:12]: Oh, look at you. You're getting them somewhere. Tiff [00:32:15]: You know, Reginald Ferguson [00:32:15]: you don't you don't go in the dome? You don't go in the dome? Uh-uh. 1. Tiff [00:32:20]: Why wouldn't I use a glossary? Reginald Ferguson [00:32:21]: Ladies and gentlemen, I'm doing it from the dome. Tiff [00:32:24]: Well, you know what? I know when I'm up against here. So I have to use my resources. Reginald Ferguson [00:32:29]: So Well, that was good. You got me. Tiff [00:32:31]: And the reason why I like these on trousers is because it's a nice clean look. you don't sometimes I think a belt sort of you know, it it changes a look. And and you you really You really have to be going for a certain look to wear these. Reginald Ferguson [00:32:56]: Agreed. I wanna chime in though. Guys, if you're my client, if you're gonna wear that, you can't have a belly. Tiff [00:33:05]: That's kinda what I was trying to say without Reginald Ferguson [00:33:07]: Well, why'd you oh, I know because you're just on the south. You didn't wanna Well, I'm from here. I'm from up Tiff [00:33:12]: south. Yeah. Yeah. Reginald Ferguson [00:33:13]: Hey, guys. If you're gutting, you're not using those. Tiff [00:33:17]: Right. Fred a stair warm all the time. No. And now they know what a DAC strap is. Reginald Ferguson [00:33:35]: And no one's have to battle. Tiff [00:33:37]: Alright. Alright. Bring on. Reginald Ferguson [00:33:39]: Donegal tweed.
